When Keith Holly was in high school, he was sweethearts with  a Betazoid woman named  Karo Zox,  just after high school they married.  There marriage was short and didn’t even last past the honeymoon. When they split, Keith didn’t know she was pregnant.

Karo was graced with a daughter, whom she named Veena. Karo kept Veena a secret from Keith. Karo secretly kept tabs on Keith over the years, including his new family when he remarried.  Karo encouraged her daughter to follow her heart and it led her to Starfleet and upon Veena’s graduation from Starfleet Karo told Veena the truth about her father.
A week after Veena found out the truth, Karo tracked down Keith and told him about their daughter, there was a massive fight between the two of them and they parted on bad terms.

Veena's life was spent among the stars. She was born and raised on Luna Colony, but she was happy and spent a lot of time moving around with unquenchable wanderlust. When Veena was eighteen she headed for Earth. Veena obtained her bachelor’s degree in Nursing, two Doctoral Degrees, the first in Medicine and the Second in Psychoneuroimmunology. When she entered Starfleet she felt all that was left was for her to pass the officer conversion course. When Veena was eighteen she and her bond mate Doxen Kode also got married, and they supported each other through everything, including the birth of their only daughter, Kixen. They were both assigned their first Commission on the USS Venus where they were happy until Doxen's transfer to Luna Colony in 2392. Feeling that a Colony would be the best place for Kixen, Veena insisted he take her with him, and it nearly broke her heart. As such she put up a wall around her heart as she was transferred to the USS Tell.

Rudolf Calvin comes from a family of Star Fleet officers. Growing in urban area on Earth he always liked engineering and dreamed of becoming a Chief Engineer one day. He graduated basic school and high school with very good marks but instead of signing up for Star Fleet Academy he surprised everyone when he signed as an enlisted security crew member with Star Fleet and left on the first available posting.
 
This however is not so surprising when understanding what happened during his studies. Rudolf fell deeply in love with his high school sweetheart and was fortunate enough to get together with her. He and Marie dated for nearly three years. Shortly before graduation however Marie left him for his best friend who, as well as Rudolf, wanted to go study at Star Fleet Academy. Faced with a choice to undergo four years in school with someone he couldn't but hate (or worse witnessing his ex-girlfriend and his ex-best friend together) he decided to join Star Fleet immediately signing for the shortest training program (security) and accepting the first possible post.
 
After serving on USS Calcutta for nearly seven years Rudolf was offered two options - being promoted to Petty Officer 2nd Class and getting more responsibilities on the ship or getting the best possible reference from his superiors and going back to his original dream - studying engineering.
 
Rudolf picked the second option.
