The Kazleti are species originally native to the planet Kazletzin in the Piavon Regalias Sector. After a catastrophic natural disaster four hundred years ago that forced the evacuation of their homeworld the Kazleti had since become a divided race, with one faction joining the Federation, and the other the Klingon Empire.

==History==

===Introduction===
Renowned as scholars, warriors, and above all, artisans, the Kazleti have been an important fixture of galactic culture for over a millennium. Originating from the world of Kazletzin Primus, directly in the middle of the Klingon Neutral Zone, the Kazleti were forced to evacuate their original homeworld four hundred years ago when the planet became unstable. Over several decades, the world was steadily evacuated and the Kazleti split into two groups. Many Kazleti went to the Klingon Empire and bolstered the already considerable Kazleti population and formally joined the Empire as a client race. The slim majority of Kazleti instead opted to colonize a new homeworld several light-years away. Since that time, the two groups have drifted apart to form two distinct cultural groups. Those Kazleti in the Klingon Empire are influenced by Klingon culture, which is similar to the culture present on their original homeworld. Those Kazleti that settled on Kazletzin Secundus are notably more liberal and open, and later joined the Federation, with their culture in turn being influenced by other Federation members. From the time that the Kazleti on Kazletzin Secundus joined the Federation, to the signing of the second Khitomer Accords, the two groups were nearly totally isolated from one another due to animosity between their two respective Empires. When relations finally improved in the 2350s, the two groups found the cultural differences that had accumulated through centuries of divergent cultural evolution to be just enough to effectively split their once united race into two distinct groups.

Like the Federation and Klingon values these two respective groups of Kazleti respectively uphold, their cultures are not totally incompatible, but are very different from one another, which has led to their sundering. The main difference between the two groups is the degree to which they uphold their old religion, Kiviezti, and the associated caste system. While the Federation Kazleti have all but done away with the caste-system (at least formally and legally), the Imperial Kazleti stick to the system, though it is slightly modified from the old system, without a distinct and separate noble class.

With recent hostile relations between the Klingon Empire and the Federation, it is unknown if the two groups of Kazleti will ever reconcile, but both groups remain very loyal to their chosen power and are increasingly identifying themselves as either Federation or Klingon, instead of Kazleti.

===Language===
The Kazleti are known for their incredibly complex languages. The main, standard, common tongue of Karutin is known for sounding 'liquid' and 'beautifully poetic' but being near indecipherable for many translators, organic or otherwise. Karutin shares many of the most common aspects of various Kalzeti languages, though not all of them, and its vocabulary and grammar are most like the Kantenkenese language, though there are significant contributions by High Beuldaerian, Dilzin, and Vocakhaelin. Karutin has no concrete distinction between plural and singular, or between genders, only sexes, which usually consist of technical terms related to anatomy. For instance, the Karutin word for 'bride' (a loose translation) "Kevensi", literally means "Second Half", and is only pejoratively Feminine due to the word's relation to Kazleti marriages, when the 'bride' enters the chapel after her prospective husband has initiated the ceremony, symbolizing their creation myth. In same-sex wedding scenarios, the words for 'bride' and 'groom', 'lose' their gender characteristics. This is the same with the word "Kykshen", the Karutin word for 'crowd', which literally means 'Unruly' and while it is almost exclusively used to refer to large groups of people, it is not dictated that it always is.

This lack of set, grammatical differences between plural and singular words, and a lack of grammatical gender, made it near impossible for many outsiders to communicate with them initially as normal translation matrixes didn't work and the language barrier was larger than usual. This has led to Karutin being rarely spoken by Kazleti off their own worlds, with Federation Standard and other trade languages taking precedent. All Kazleti children are educated in multiple languages from birth, and those on the homeworld typically learn 3 before their age of majority, their own regional/ethnic language used at home, Karutin which is most commonly used in public, and Federation standard. Many children in the Kazleti diaspora communities only known Federation standard as the praxis of teaching Karutin and other languages is seen as having little praxis by Kazleti expatriate parents as most have an extremely hard time learning Karutin, and because nearly all Kazleti speak Federation Standard.

Many Kazleti languages, Karutin included, typically have 2-3 styles of speech that vary based on social context. All of these styles have their own grammatical rules, vocabulary and pronunciation. In Karutin, there are 3 'Tones' that correspond with increasing formality. The first tone, "Nara" is the formal tone, literally meaning "High Son", it is used informally by peers and colleagues and is the tone of everyday life, it is also spoken by those in a superior position, to those in an inferior position. Hnkisu is the second tone, and is somewhere between formal and informal, it is most commonly used by people who do not know one another, or by people not wishing to be too informal, or too formal. Nehuar is the third tone and the most formal one and is used in public speeches and formal announcements and is used by people in inferior status to those in a superior one. There are also certain nuances to the vocabulary used in each tense, for instance one never uses the most formal words to refer to oneself, and certain words, even expressions, are reserved for certain tenses.
==Customs==
Because of their divided nature, the two groups of Kazleti sometimes have different customs, usually influenced by the culture of the state in which they reside, either the Federation or the Klingon Empire. A (K), next to a custom denotes a custom found almost exclusively among those Kazleti in the Klingon Empire, while a (F), denotes a custom exclusive to those Kazleti residing in the Federation.

==Military==
The Kazleti have a strong military tradition and are renowned as warriors throughout the quadrant, those in the Klingon Empire especially. Where once there was a dedicated warrior caste, this tradition remains exclusive to the Klingon Kazleti though the Federation Kazleti have preserved many of the old training traditions. They are known for their skills with multiple classes of weapons and for carrying many of them on their person as they go into battle, switching weapons to deal with every situation. The Kazleti are also known as master shipwrights, though more so the Federation Kazleti than those in the Klingon Empire, and their ships are known for their beautiful and ornate designs.
