Derovan had a relatively comfortable childhood as the son of a brilliant medical researcher, and the adopted son of a highly respected politician. As a teenager, Derovan qualified as a candidate for ValakiStar, a program set up to identify and develop young Valakians with the aptitude and talent to become Starfleet officers. With a natural talent for mathematics, Derovan achieved the standards necessary to apply for Starfleet, and was accepted into the Academy upon graduation from Valakis Secondary Institute. | |||
As the Valakian population only numbered in the hundreds of thousands, the Valakian population is subject to the fear that their voices would be lost within the Federation's multitude of planets and species. ValakiStar was implemented to send as many Valakians as possible into StarFleet, thereby exerting some influence on the Federation through the political connections developed therein.
