Raissa was born in Williamsburg, Virginia a direct descendant of the Mataponi Indians of that region. While she was raised with the sophistication available in the 24th century, she was also well steeped in the traditions of her ancestors. As she grew up she showed a skill for the native traditions of healing and herbalism. She had a fine touch with the ill and aged. Thanks to her betazoid heritage from her grandmother, Raissa has low level empathic ability. She can only use her ability when she touches a patient, but with her grandmother's help she was able to learn the best way to use it and how to block out others if there were accidental touches. Her blocks work well, most of the time. Her family encouraged her to expand her skill and allowed her to attend the Medical College of Virginia for further training to become a doctor at age 17.  
Raissa was born near Leech Lake near the Ojibwe Reservation. She is a direct descendant of several Native American tribes,
notably Ojibwe and Lakota. Her great, great grandmother (paternal) developed an interest in llamas and started the business
of raising them.
 
Raissa and her elder twin brothers were raised in an environment that combined living in harmony with nature and the
the sophistication of modern technology. Her upbringing was steeped in the traditions of her ancestors both paternal and maternal. Of the three Moonsong siblings, Raissa showed the natural aptitude skill for the native traditions of healing and herbalism along with a skill in dealing the ill and aged.
 
Her grandfather, David began training her at a young age in the tribe traditions. Her betazoid heritage inherited from her maternal grandmother, Tianna, gave her low level empathic ability she was able to include in her training. It was with her grandmother's help she was able to learn how to use her empathy effectively when dealing with others.  
 
At age 17, Raissa began her medical training to be a doctor with the intention to return home to be a doctor there. But during her second semester, she worked in a recovery center helping to care for Starfleet who had to undergo long periods of therapy. She enjoyed learning from these men and women about their careers. In particular an officer who had retired and was happy to tell Raissa stories of his 'adventures'.


It was originally her intention to return home to be a doctor there, but during her third year as an intern, one of her patients was a Starfleet officer, badly injured and due for retirement.  
In time she found she was no longer satisfied remaining on Earth and decided to apply to Starfleet Academy at the end of her second term in college. Her decision came as a surprise to her family but they chose to be supportive of her desire to see more than their world could offer. Her fiance at the time, a fellow medical student, did not support her decision and the engagement ended soon after.


Raissa spent a great deal of time in his company and he was happy to have a willing audience for him many adventures among the stars. He told her of the good times as well as the bad and she listened with a great deal of interest. She gained an interest in the stars beyond her home world and requested a transfer to Starfleet Academy to add her studies and take her career futher much to her family's amazement and to the extreme displeasure of her fiancé' a fellow medical student. Needless to say the engagement ended.
At the Academy, due to her aptitudes, Raissa changed her major from medicine to psychology. Her first four years at Starfleet Academy included getting her degree in psychology and because of her linguistic aptitude, she began learning more languages An additional two years were spent at Starfleet Medical perfecting her skills and learning new ones as it related to other species.

She enjoyed the learning as well as the environment. She had a large number of friends and was very social, able to get along with many of her fellow students. While not exceptional in her studies, she managed to remain firmly in the center of the top third of her class.

Raissa gives the impression of being always calm and in control. At heart she doesn't think she is anything special and sometimes has to suppress her own insecurities in order to fully focus on the needs of her patients. She is very warm and caring, not only to her patients but to those whom she chooses as friends.

She is a deeply loyal friend and will go to almost any length to protect those she cares about. At heart she doesn't think she is anything special and but she will do anything in her power to make sure others know their value.
