Each subspecies has a central core nervous system that allows it to function, though its intelligence is limited to basic survival.  Covered in a chlorophyll-filled skin membrane, they get their energy from anoxygenic photosynthesis.  Light and water is enough to sustain a single portion of the body for a time, but the full body needs food as well.
