Shortly after this transfer, it became apparent that a few modifications of the ship would be necessary to make it suitable for deep-space missions, as opposed to the shorter limited-range missions she had been used to.  Thus, she spent three weeks in the Planetia Utopia shipyards while these modifications were carried out, as well as her second major refit.

Shortly after this, she took part in the decisive battle against the Grendellai slavers that also involved the Independence and the Kodiak.  She also assisted in the evacuation of a Tzenkethi planet that was collapsing, and returned 150 Tzenkethi scientists to the border in a display of goodwill.
