((Rosek’s Quarters, USS Gorkon))
:: Lael frowned as she read the letter.::
//
TO:
FROM: Brieta N. Weisman
SUBJECT: Your Guardianship of the Minor Madeline Young
This letter is to inform you that the individual Madeline’s mother, Abigail Young, named as guardian in the event of her passing has herself passed. Given that you are listed as an alternate guardian, it is requested that you respond to this communication promptly stating when you wish to receive Madeline into your care. If you are unable to fulfill your duties for any reason, please let me know so that we might begin the process of finding a foster family for her.
Yours,
Brieta N. Weisman

:: Lael closed her eyes, exhaling heavily.::
Rosek: o0Well, damn. If this isn’t just the straw.0o
((End Flashback))
((Corridor, USS Gorkon))
:: Lael looked down at the five year old that she now held by the hand. It was almost surreal, knowing that she had a little person who was now one hundred percent dependent on her. She grinned wryly to herself, thinking back to a conversation with Jansen before she’d left for Luraul. ::
((Flashback--Two Weeks Earlier))
((Rosek’s Quarters, USS Gorkon))
:: Lael bolted upright, gasping for breath. A fine sheen of sweat covered her face, neck and shoulders. She swallowed roughly, her heart still racing from the images her sleeping mind had tormented her with. Unthinkingly, she fumbled for the combadge on her bedside table.::
Rosek: ::rasps:: =/\=Lael to Jansen.=/\=
Orrey: ::speaking through a yawn.:: =/\=Orrey here…=/\=
:: Lael practically sighed in relief. It calmed her racing heart slightly just hearing his voice. ::
Rosek: ::murmurs:: =/\=I’m sorry to wake you at this hour...but I could use a friend.=/\=
Orrey: =/\=Come on..I'll put the tea on.=/\=
:: Lael sighed, closing the link. She then slipped into her robe and a pair of bunny slippers that she’d received from Kellan for her birthday this past year. Wrapping the robe tightly around her, she tied it closed and began the long walk to Jansen’s quarters. ::
((Orrey’s Quarters, USS Gorkon))
:: By the time she reached his quarters, her brain had caught up with her and she hesitated, contemplating going back to bed. She sighed and shook her head, knowing that she wouldn’t be able to sleep until she saw for herself that he was fine and that it was just a nightmare. She pressed her thumb to the door chime and waited. ::
:: For his part after the channel closed, Jansen pulled himself from bed and pulled a tank top on to go along with the pajama pants he was wearing already before getting the tea to steep in the porcelain pot he brought back with him. Edgar for his part of being woken from the warm nap curled up on the blanket draped chair below the Orrey family crest and laid his head down as Jansen moved to open the door.::
:: Lael hugged herself tightly to keep out a chill, looking up when the door opened. It took everything she had not to throw herself into his arms. His face brought back the horrifying images from her nightmare and she shivered. ::
Orrey: ::Motioning her inside.:: What's going on?
:: Lael entered, her gaze cast downward. She exhaled heavily before she spoke.::
Rosek: ::murmurs:: I had a nightmare. ::pauses:: I couldn’t relax until I knew you were all right.
Orrey: ::He moved over to the tea set and poured her a cup turning and handing it to her.:: So you had a nightmare about me?
Rosek: ::sips her tea and nods, then shivers:: That awful place. I...I dreamed that I lost you to it.
Orrey: ::He poured his own cup and turned to face her.:: hmm?
Rosek: ::pauses:: Something happened that I haven’t told anyone but my counselor.
Orrey: Oh?
Rosek: ::closes her eyes and exhales heavily:: Do you remember when that group was trapped in that corridor? I was trying to help them get out of there...trying to strengthen the forcefield when that section lost structural integrity? ::swallows roughly:: The day that we lost my friend Abigail Young?
Orrey: ::He nods sipping his tea.:: I remember that yes.
Rosek: ::gaze drops to her cup:: I wasn’t even in the Jeffries Tube when the forcefield gave out. ::exhales shakily:: I scrambled into the Tube and fought to shut and seal the hatch. ::tears spill over:: I left them to die while I ran like a coward. ::worries her lower lip:: Every night, I relive it. I try to change the outcome...try to force myself to head back and stabilize the forcefield. ::shivers:: Tonight, instead of her face in her last moments, I saw yours.
