Personal Background

Raissa was born in Williamsburg, Virginia a direct descendant of the Mataponi Indians of that region. While she was raised with the sophistication available in the 24th century, she was also well steeped in the traditions of her ancestors. As she grew up she showed a skill for the native traditions of healing and herbalism. She had a fine touch with the ill and aged. Thanks to her betazoid heritage from her grandmother, Raissa has low level empathic ability. She can only use her ability when she touches a patient, but with her grandmother's help she was able to learn the best way to use it and how to block out others if there were accidental touches. Her blocks work well, most of the time. Her family encouraged her to expand her skill and allowed her to attend the Medical College of Virginia for further training to become a doctor at age 17.

It was originally her intention to return home to be a doctor there, but during her third year as an intern, one of her patients was a Starfleet officer, badly injured and due for retirement.

Raissa spent a great deal of time in his company and he was happy to have a willing audience for him many adventures among the stars. He told her of the good times as well as the bad and she listened with a great deal of interest. She gained an interest in the stars beyond her home world and requested a transfer to Starfleet Academy to add her studies and take her career futher much to her family's amazement and to the extreme displeasure of her fiancé' a fellow medical student. Needless to say the engagement ended.

Raissa spent four years at Starfleet Academy along with an additional two years at Starfleet Medical perfecting her skills and learning new ones as it related to other species. She enjoyed the learning as well as the environment. She had a large number of friends and was very social, able to get along with many of her fellow students. While not exceptional in her studies, she managed to remain firmly in the center of the top third of her class.

Personality Profile

Raissa gives the impression of being always calm and in control. At heart she doesn't think she is anything special and sometimes has to suppress her own insecurities in order to fully focus on the needs of her patients. She is very warm and caring, not only to her patients but to those whom she chooses as friends.
