"To offend the spirits is to invite disaster, death or worse upon you and your tribe."
a Pelosian proverb.
The Pelosians are a primitive, pre-metal using humanoid species that practices a form of non-lethal raiding upon the other tribes around them. They were saved from extinction by Captain Kirk who violated the Prime Directive to save them.

History

The Pelosians developed on a world of vast plains divided by numerous rivers and dotted by countless fresh water lakes. Mixed into this were small mountain ranges with towering mountains that were the creation of long extinct volcanic eruptions.

For the most part they are a mix of tribes with some of them being nomadic hunters, some farmers and a few being primitive fishermen. There are a few cases where some of these basic types can be found in the same tribe but they are few and far between.

During his historic five-year mission aboard the USS Enterprise this was one of the planets visited by Captain James T. Kirk and his crew. They were attracted to this system by long range scans of unusual solar activity, massive solar flares that they decided to investigate.

Once in the system they examined the sun and learned that the solar flares were only going to increase in strength and severity. This would result in the destruction of at least the first two planets in the system and possible even the third as well. Unfortunately while the odds were good that the 4th planet would survive there was every indication that the primitive pre-metal civilization living there would be destroyed.

In direct violation of the Prime Directive Captain Kirk ordered Spock to find a way in which to reverse the progressive deterioration of their sun. When confronted by Spock that by doing so they would violate the Prime Directive, his response was how can it, when they will never even know we were here. They were able to reverse the progressive deterioration of their sun and left a probe behind to monitor its condition.

24 years later the Federation sent a team to observe and study the Pelosians, a study that took 11 years before the team was recalled.

Government

Each tribe has its own unique form of government and the research team recorded the presence of the following types, matriarchal, chieftain, council, shaman, elder and speculated that there could very easily be others there that they had failed to discover.

Description

The Pelosians are a primitive humanoid species that practice a number of different types of ritualistic scaring, branding and markings which include the use of primitive tattoos. They use feathers, animal bones and other items as decoration and depending on the tribe some or all of these markings and decorations may have some form of meaning. They tend to be fit, athletic and very healthy. Males are slightly taller and more bulky than the females. Both males and females tend to wear leather footwear that can be anything between a soft shoe to a knee high boot. They also wear a single leather wrap around their waist that usually hangs down to their knees. The wear nothing on their top half except for the markings and primitive decorations.

Physiology

As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.

Psychology

The experts who observed them found that they tended to be fairly well adjusted mentally and that they seemed to live a life almost devoid of stress. However they did notice some unusual behaviour that would seem to indicate that there was some radical mental health issues that seemed to affect a very small minority of their population.

Religion

While all of the tribes observed seemed to believe in the presence of some form of spirit force that was an intricate part of the world and everything around them, most tribes divided them into minor and major spirits with there being a number of differences in how each tribe made that distinction.

Mythology

While they do not have any form of written language they do have a strong oral tradition with many tales and myths being performed for the tribe in conjunction with music in the form of rhythmic drum beats and chanting. This is usually accompanied by individuals acting out the various roles in the stories.

Society

They live in a primitive pre-metal society where hard work is the only thing between them and starvation. Generally the whole tribe works together, co-operating to overcome the elements, gather enough food and survive any ill fortune.

Culture

They enjoy rhythmic drums coupled to chanting and singing that tells a story. Added to this is dancing and the telling of stories by having individuals acting out the various roles.

Customs

Raids upon each other are done for plunder, sport and bragging rights. They are also a means by which a young man can acquire a wife. Combat during these raids is non-lethal and seem to be more for fun than anything else.

Technology

They have no metal items of any kind and no understanding of how to make them. They understand the principles of farming and fishing and have tamed, domesticated a number of different animals. They have no written language.

Economy

All of the tribes are completely self-sufficient and their does not seem to be any form of trade between them unless it is as a result of a raid and a female is being traded back to their own tribe.

Military

Each tribe has individuals who seem to spend most of their time acting as warriors but in most cases when there is conflict between tribes it does not end in death and rarely in serious injuries. All males regardless of their main occupation within the tribe may end up taking part in these raids which seem to be fought more for sport and as some kind of one up man ship. However they do take things in these raids including females that may then be bartered back to their original tribe or given as a wife to one of the males who took her.

Federation Intelligence Files

The Pelosians were a species saved from extinction, in violation of the Prime Directive, by Captain James T. Kirk during his historic five-year mission aboard the USS Enterprise.

In 2378, Icheb included this information, along with Kirk's encounters with the Baezians and the Chenari, in his final report to Captain Kathryn Janeway, as part of the Early Starfleet History course of his Academy training.
