With a traditional StarFleet Marine father, he was raised to value military values and discipline but grew to resent the strict discipline given his penchant for challenging status quo and dislike for conformity. His two older sisters, Emma and Elly, were brought up under the same environment but managed to subtly play the gender card in order to attain autonomy in their career choices, though it would seem that the “damage” has already been done as both ended up at StarFleet Academy. They were able to choose their majors however – a choice that was denied to Ethan because he is the only son of the family. It was a choice that almost could not be made, because unlike his studious sisters, he prioritized his hobbies, which included astronomy and first-hand scientific experimentation, over school as a child and the general consensus of his teachers then was that he would never make it to StarFleet Academy. Ethan’s willful disregard for the books before high school was encouraged by his sisters, who admired his courage to rebel, and their unity in the face of the strong parental interference laid important foundations for close sibling relations that remain to this day. Their mother provided some degree of counter-balance against their father, oft persuading her husband to give the children a freer hand in making decisions, but if there is one area of decision-making that an Asian college professor would deprive the kids of, it was education. This subjected Ethan to countless reprimands until he concluded early on in high school that the only way he would be able to escape parental control over his life is to get himself posted to a StarFleet ship far away from Earth. He explored the option of enlisting until he received news, much to everyone’s surprise, that he had been admitted to StarFleet Academy. His last ditch efforts during high school to bring himself up to speed with his peers with regards to test-taking skills had paid off.
In accordance to his father’s wishes, he read the Marine major at the Academy, though on the condition that his parents are to play no further role in determining the course of his career. With a natural aptitude for the sciences and logical problem-solving, he enjoyed his minor (engineering) far more than his major and that showed in his grades, which were overall rather dismal given his disdain for the more physical aspects of Marine education. Thankfully, his logical and flexible mind is put to good use when it comes to military operations and tactics, and his genius in this regard has not escaped the attention of his commanders. Unfortunately, he had a couple of run-ins with Marine Training College instructors when he failed to follow orders and adopted unilateral courses of action after outright criticizing the wisdom of old tactics and combat techniques. It was only when he was faced with the threat of expulsion that he reined in his avant-garde impulses, albeit grudgingly. He barely managed to graduate, but there remains a degree of unpredictability about him because his pride and overly abundant self-confidence in his own judgment and intellect often come into conflict with decisions made by his superiors. As a result he is not very well-liked by old school Marines, who think he has no place in their sacred Marine Corps where discipline should reign supreme. He is generally popular amongst the young enlisted men however, for he likes to treat them as peers and friends rather than his subordinates.
Although his relationship with his father is fraught with tension, inwardly he idolizes him and feels the pressure to live up to his father’s reputation in StarFleet. This pressure coupled with extremely high personal expectations of himself has dulled him somewhat but he is still generally a fun-loving free spirit. Given the strong feminine influence in his life – he talks to his sisters daily – he is a lot more in touch with his emotions than most men, and is prone to having emotion rule his judgment. This makes him a rather conflicted character at times, for he has an agile logical mind that he is proud of and tries to apply to most situations, yet his heart applies itself to overrule the mind on many occasions.
