a Markalian proverb.

History

Their early history is one of peaceful co-existence. Food was plentiful and life was fairly easy. However as their population continued to grow it soon exceeded their food supply. Now they had to work hard, they needed more efficient tools and equipment and better ways of renewing the lands nutrients if they wanted to continue to be able to provide for all of their people.

Their world proved to be mineral poor. What they did have was of poor quality and required extensive and expensive procedures to make it useful. Even with all of their technological advances there was only so much food they could produce.

It was at this time that they discovered space travel and encountered other species. They learned about other cultures and that many other species lived easier, less survival oriented lives. As a result many of them sought off world employment as a means to provide for their families. Most of these have ended up in low paying yet physically demanding occupations.

However as time passed more and more of them found employment as mercenaries, bodyguards, security officers and criminals, those that did often joining many of the more established organizations as low level thugs, hired muscle and enforcers.

Now there are almost as many of them living off world as there are those still living on Kuashii III and even with all of their exposure to other species, cultures and technologies they still struggle to improve the quality of life on their own homeworld.

Government

They have no unified planetary government and many of their communities lack any form of organized leadership. The strong take what they want and while some do try to make things better for those around them it is usually confined to their district, zone or town.

Description

They were characterized by a hairless head with small scales and thorns all over their faces, a striped pattern on the backs of their skulls and small oval depressions on the sides of their heads with no visible earlobes. For the most part these humanoids tend to be fit and are on average between 5’8” and 6’2”.

Physiology

As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.

Psychology

Not much funding or effort has been expended on treating or dealing with mental health issues and while they may not suffer from as many phobias as other species they do have their share of other forms of mental health conditions.

Due to the hard struggle that the majority of their population must undergo in order to survive and feed themselves and their families most of them have adopted a fatalistic approach to life. Anything is acceptable if it results in them being able to provide for themselves and improve their quality of life.

Religion

Some, a very small minority still believe in Jur’Vangu, a mythical being that rewards those who serve him well.

Mythology

Not much remains of their ancient myths, merely fragments of tales and the occasional scroll or cave painting lost and uncared for.

Society

Their communities are mostly lacking in infrastructure, amenities, health care, sanitation, power availability and a host of other normal daily requirements. They are also dull, filthy, lacking in repair and upkeep as well as having numerous ghetto and condemned areas and structures.

Culture

Because the majority of their population is so poverty stricken and consumed with the never ending chore of trying to survive, they have very little appreciation for any art forms unless it is to wonder how much it may be worth and where could they sell it.

Customs

They do not seem to have developed any customs. Most experts believe this is due to the never ending struggle just to survive that consumes so much of their everyday lives.

Technology

While they have discovered space travel and warp drive technology they do not have a very large manufacturing infrastructure and the majority of the population live at a technological level far below what one would expect as a result.

Economy

They have an extremely poor economy and very little of anything that they could use to trade. Raw resources are of poor quality with almost no heavy metals, gems or other valuable resources.

As a result the only real noticeable commodity that they ship off world are members of their own species who are seeking employment anywhere they can find it.

Military

They have no military forces and no military vessels of any kind. Even after establishing contact with many other species they have not needed to develop any military as their world has nothing to offer to any one foolish enough to waste the time to conquer it.

Federation Intelligence Files

At the beginning of 2369, when the Federation took over control of Deep Space 9, Nog and a Markalian thief were taking advantage of the chaotic situation and tried to loot the station's assay office. They were caught by Odo however. As there was no way out, the Markalian thief threw a mace-like weapon at Odo, thinking to knock the constable out that way. He didn't know however, that Odo was a Changeling and could just let the weapon pass through his face unharmed.

Some Markalians are permanent residents on Deep Space 9 and others come and go. As a result they are often seen on the Promenade or in Quark's.

The notorious Markalian smuggling operation is a well-known criminal organization. Many Markalians find work in the freight business and some of them are a part of the smuggling operation. Many others are employed by various other criminal individuals and organizations.

Asoth was a Markalian customer of Quark's Bar in 2369 and was not happy at all with Quark's Kohlanese stew.

Durg was an Markalian mercenary, employed by the Kobliad murderer Rao Vantika. In 2369, he and his two Bajoran assistants were sent to Deep Space 9 to intercept and steal a shipment of deuridium. He met with Quark on the station to receive information on the shipment, only to find that Kobliad security officer Ty Kajada was spying on them, when she fell off the second level. He attacked and boarded the Norkova, firing at the crew. After Vantika had found his work unsatisfactory, he killed Durg.

By the 2370s Markalians had also visited planet Earth. One Markalian customer was part of Tom Paris's holographic representation of Sandrine's.

The Albino also employed an unnamed Markalian as head guard of his fortress on the planet Secarus IV.

Regana Tosh was a Markalian who worked for the Markalian smuggling operation. He was arrested by Odo in 2372 for attempting to sell Tallonian crystals. Odo had hoped to infiltrate the Markalian smuggling operation using Tosh, who was one of their middlemen. However, the operation failed when Worf intervened. Worf was finding it difficult to adjust to being in the command section of Deep Space 9 instead of being in security. Regana Tosh is a known felon and was considered dangerous. He was convicted of trafficking in jewels of sound and served a three-year sentence at the Kar Zartkaar detention facility.

A Markalian was of part of the crew of the Xhosa, Kasidy Yates' freighter.

Another wounded Markalian was cared for in the battlefield hospital on Ajilon Prime.

At least one Markalian was imprisoned at the Dominion Internment Camp 371 in 2373.

A Markalian watched a Dominion convoy enter the Alpha Quadrant in late 2373.

Madrat was another member of the Markalian species and a guest in Quark's in 2374. He was wounded with a broken glass bottle by a confused adult Molly O'Brien. He was taken to the infirmary, where he was treated for his wounds by Doctor Julian Bashir. When he had recovered he pressed charges against the O'Briens for assault with a deadly weapon.
