The Koinonian are an intelligent people who were though to have destroyed themselves after becoming embroiled in a multi-generational war centuries ago, formerly co-existing with a race of compassionate energy beings who were disgusted by the war's toll and survived it. First Federation contact came with a native of the latter on its homeworld, long thought to be legend only, by the USS Enterprise-D in 2366.
