Born into the nightmare of Gideon’s overpopulation crisis, she was 44 when the disease solution was implemented. The beginning of a life marked by loss, her parents, brothers, and several close friends chose to take the plunge. Their actions were framed as heroic, and they were, but as each died her fear grew. And when she was the only one standing in her family, she was shamed for being the one left. Terrified of death and of the changing world, she fled Gideon.

Eostre has a deep and consuming fear of death and of disease and its ravages. For much of her life this caused her to flee from death in all its forms, seeking somewhere safe, trying to avoid the subject. But life has not been kind to her; not only was she forced to see it take those she valued again and again, she always seemed to be surrounded by it. After an outbreak of Choriocytosis all but wiped out the Orion crew she’d lived with for years, something in her changed; the fear became a respect, a twisted sort of love. Instead of running, she would look it in the eye. Instead of running, she would understand. And instead of hiding, she would boldly go.

She joined Starfleet 20 years ago, a wonderful change compared to the cramped, dirty and disease-ridden gutters of the Galaxy she'd ended up in before. While she retains her old fear, now it has morphed, and she studies health and medicine with a razor-sharp intellect and a frosty bedside manner. Her fascination with death is....notable, making her not the best choice to console patients.

Her old fear is not gone, though; she insists on wearing a protective biosuit at almost all times, a measure to protect her fragile immune system. While her Gideon regeneration has saved her time and again, bacterial and viral infections are often a horror, manifesting a quick and terrible illness. The suit is not strictly necessary, but she wears it more as an assurance than an effective barrier; she feels safer in it, and thus refuses to leave it save in her incredibly clean quarters.
