Engineering technology and equipment have become increasingly more advanced, since the 20th century. This database contains notes on some of the more common engineering equipment at the disposal of a 24th-century Starfleet Engineer.

Engineering Tricorder

This standard tricorder has been modified to locate and diagnose problems in technological devices. When closed an engineering tricorder appears superficially identical to a standard tricorder but, when open, it clearly possesses additional controls and readouts. While it is most effective when analyzing Federation devices, it can provide a wealth of information about unknown alien technologies.

Hyperspanner

Hyperspanners are handheld devices that function as a general-purpose engineering tool. They can be used to repair relays and circuits, alter and realign systems, and attach or unfasten screws, bolts, and other fasteners.

Sonic Driver

This small, lightweight hand tool can open access panels and remove or replace fasteners without the necessity of using manual force. It has similar functions to a hyperspanner, but is small enough to fit into a pocket or equipment pouch.

Plasma Torch

Plasma Torches are a general-purpose cutting tool that uses hot plasma to cut through almost any material, including the advanced alloy used for starship hulls.

Laser Torch

Laser Torches are standard cutting tools utilizing laser technology.

Plasma Torch

Plasma Torches are a general-purpose cutting tool that uses hot plasma to cut through almost any material, including the advanced alloy used for starship hulls.

Laser Drills

Laser Drills come in different sizes, with the largest versions mounted on heavy equipment. They utilize a laser to cut through rocks and other minerals, and are therefore used predominantly for mining and excavations.

Phaser Drills

Phaser Drills are bulky, powerful tools used for cutting or blasting through large amounts of tough material, including starship hulls.

Micro-Optic Drill

The Micro-Optic Drill is a handheld device that can drill holes through all common materials. It stands out due to it’s precision, and can even be set to drill microscopic holes.

Laser Welders

Laser Welders are small, handheld welders that can be used for all standard forms of metal welding.

Magnetic Probe

These devices are small cylinders are used to work with plasma flows and the magnetic fields that control them in EPS conduits. A magnetic probe can even be used to directly interact with the matter/antimatter flow in a starship’s warp core. Before it is used, the probe’s magnetic field must be adjusted to align with the magnetic flow of the field with which it is to interact.

Field Destabilizer

Field destabilizers are a safer and more powerful alternative to overloading a force field. Typically used in pairs, they are set up on either side of the opening that is sealed by a force field the user wishes to take down. The device must be modulated to set up a destructive interference pattern that temporarily negates the force field. Standard portable field destabilizers are slender, portable cylinders, which include a tripod stand.

Transport Inhibitors

These devices prevent transporters from being used to materialize or dematerialize people or objects within a specific area. Inhibitors emit a variable energy field which prevents a transporter from obtaining a pattern lock on the protected area and everything inside it.
