Dinner went well. No major diplomatic screw-ups, nobody declared war on anyone else, and I got promoted.

Yeah, that was a shock. I wasn't the only one - pretty much everyone seems to have been bumped a grade - but it's happened so fast...

Anyway, like I said, the party went fine, except for a little hiccup where Tash decided to slip off with some Romulan woman. The Captain was not amused by that. Neither was the Praetor, I guess, but she's not my problem. I've got a nasty feeling I'm going to have to keep an eye on Assanti and Tash. If their personal stuff gets out of control, things are gonna get real messy, real quick.

Still, it was after the Romulans left that the fireworks began. Well, I should say "most of the Romulans", as it turns out we had a couple of uninvited guests stick around. At least one of them made a play to try and do something nasty to Janus and the rest, but I managed to get them clear, whilst Baker took the guy down. Sadly, it didn't go all that smoothly, as the XO got hit, and is currently in sickbay.

The bad news doesn't end there. You know I said there was more than one? Well, the other took Banks and a bunch of other crewmen hostage. Started demanding that the Tal Shiar agent, Mellia, be brought to him. Well, the Captain wasn't just going to cave in, and a plan was cooked up - some kind of deception using Mellia as bait. It didn't go according to plan.

The bad guy was taken down, sure. But Tash... From what I've been able to find out, Tash went in with Mellia as part of the whole fake prisoner exchange, only shots got fired. One of them was meant for Mellia, but he took it instead.

He'd gotten promoted earlier. Assanti made him Second Officer. He was getting his problems under control, and all was starting to look good.

We'll hold a proper memorial service for him when we get the chance. For now, the Captain gave a surprisingly good impromptu eulogy for him. It can't have been easy for her, and my respect for that woman is growing more every day.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go get a very strong drink. Counselors don't tend to have patients die on them, and I need to get my head straight - we're not done with this mission yet.
