Danica's parents met while vacationing on the same Alaskan cruise ship in 2358. Her father (William Reed), a technician aboard a civilian, interplanetary freighter, and her mother (Jade Valyn), a primary school teacher on Earth; would carry on a romantic relationship for several years. Having never married, the two would eventually have a daughter, Danica, who would be raised primarily by her mother on Earth. William, though often off planet, maintained an active role in her life. Having never been able to convice Jade to marry him, he eventually married another woman, and had another daughter. Danica was very close with her younger sister, the two often engaging in long conversations over subspace.
Danica was born on stardate 236202.26, in the small town of Venice, Florida on the planet Earth.  She was raised by her mother, who was a local primary school teacher.  Venice is located on the western coast of Florida, along the Gulf of Mexico.  Danica and her mother lived in a high rise condominium along the coast. The beach, just outside of her home, had always been her favorite place in the world.  Late evenings, as the sun set over the gulf’s waters, were the some of the best memories of her childhood.

Spending her childhood on Earth, Danica always longed to travel the stars. Her father worked aboard a civilian transport freighter, and while she never got to accompany him along one of their trade routes, she could never stop daydreaming of his life aboard the starship.  Her first memory of her father was of him leaving aboard his freighter, the Maiden’s Voyage. She could never recall exactly how old she was, as she watched him fly away, she just knew she was young and, at the time, very upset.  At some point during her early childhood, those initial feelings of abandonment were replaced by ones of exploration and adventure.  She would grow up seeing more of her father over subspace communications than physically face to face, but it was this life he led that intrigued her so.

Once she turned eighteen and graduated, she was accepted to Starfleet Academy.  Her mother never fully agreed with her choice, but would always support her daughter. When Danica graduated from the Academy, she took an educational leave of absence to study psychology at the University of Michigan.  She had always been a caring individual, and while she privately suffered from many of her own insecurities, she enjoyed being available for, and supporting, others.  She also saw psychology as a molding of science and art.  Where treatment techniques are based around, and supported by, empirical research, but provided through methods of the counselor’s own creativity and style.

Having spent her childhood life on Earth, and always having felt drawn to her father's life in space, Danica enrolled at Starfleet Academy in 2380, graduating in 2384. Post graduation, she studied psychology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, which she completed in 2388.
She completed her studies at the university in 2388, and immediately returned to Starfleet to participate in her cadet cruise. She completed her final training simulation on 238903.05 and was subsequently assigned to Starbase 118 Operations as a station counselor.
