With his new rank, he was instated as provisional head of the Engineering Systems Programming Office, a division of engineering that oversees computational systems aboard larger starships. Lieutenant Choi worked with his ESPO crew to enact strategic retrofitting on the Constitution's computational systems to reclass the Galaxy-class systems significantly.
During a routine surveying mission on Leron III, Choi and the away team under Lieutenant Solaris McLaren crash landed in a sensor blind spot in what the Hinji considered a sacred land called the Dawn Cradle. There, the team made contact with a Hinji monk who led them to a monastery. Choi reported that group of Hinji turned on the monastery and set fire to a building while looking to attack the Starfleet officers. McLaren's team took shelter in the monastery's sanctum, which led into what is now believed to be a scientific facility left over from the days of the Tkon Empire, guarded by Hinji warriors. The team managed to interface with the facility, deactivating the interference field, and escaped, meeting with a search and rescue team.
After this experience, Choi quickly proceeded to apply to set up a [https://wiki.starbase118.net/wiki/index.php?title=Research_and_Development_Lab_(USS_Constitution-B) research and development field lab] aboard the Constitution, located directly above the ESPO so he could continue his duties overseeing the crew stationed there.

'''Engineering Officer's log. SD 239406.11.''' I'm back on the Constitution after a very long twenty-four hours or so. I don't even know where to begin. This morning we were brought by a young Hinji acolyte to the monastery's sanctum, where a big statue that looked a bit like Lieutenant McLaren... made of a strange crystal... was located. McLaren and T'Reshik had the idea that it might give some answers to some artifacts left behind by the first Sunmother... and jeez, were they right... We ended up accessing a log of the Sunmother, an ancient alien scientist or something, named "Portal 88." She had been left behind to look after the facility, but then left to go back to her homeworld, but she'd encoded some Hinji with the ability to guard the facility... like the ombro, who it turned out was actually a Hinji after Dr. Milsap managed to help him. Also... I don't know how, but McLaren actually has some genetic connection to the Sunmother, and she was able to deactivate the interference that was keeping us there. The ombro helped us get out of the facility through a tunnel, and we ran into another Hinji, but then found an away team that was looking for us... and Wyn was with them! We just arrived back on the Constitution, and I'm in the ESPO waiting for an Ensign [[Jacob Horne]] to come help fix Georgio, who had some sort of mobile emitter failure in the Sanctum. I'm tired, but I have to make sure Georgio's okay before I can get any sleep. '''Engineering Officer's log. SD 239406.12.''' Lieutenant T'Reshik called me... very early this morning, so we met in one of the crew lounges on deck 09. She'd had a strange dream about Taurek and... satellites? She seemed convinced that something of her connection with the alien facility on Leron III had been physiologically imprinted on her, and she brought a drawing she'd done of the images in her that resembled cell glia. If the facility connected to her nervous system through a channel formed by satellite glia, it very well could have left imprints on her cells, so that gave me the idea to attempt a glia transfer into a modified bioneural processor built to accommodate Vulcan cells. If it worked, we might be able to translate some of what T'Reshik "saw" within the system! I sent a message to Wyn asking if he'll help, because neurology is his thing, and it'd be cool to work with him! And then I got to thinking, I'm going to need an actual lab to create this bioneural processor... and I've got so many other ideas after Operation Overclocking, and seeing the alien facility... so I've been working on... some plans. '''Personal log. SD 239406.12.''' ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Holy crap I need to get ready for a family dinner with Wyn! '''Constitution R&D log. SD 239409.09.''' Well, we're in business! The ESPO crew helped me set up my lab today, and I'm officially the Constitution's research and development officer! Main Engineering and Command approved my plan to re-designate a storage space directly above the ESPO... so the crew can still bother me if they feel like climbing up a Jefferies tube. And the space is beautiful, with a gorgeous view of the warp nacelles. Frag's already calling it my "evil laboratory," especially since the first two projects I'm going to be working on are the Vulcan-compatible bioneural processor and the Turing Core. [https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jCr3aOi-HlskTusfO8-P_pFTEIjsYWrLXDNSHkp1xfU/edit?usp=sharing| Part 1]
'''Personal log. SD 239409.11.''' Taurek came and visited me in the new R&D lab! My first visitor... other than the ESPO crew, who don't really count. I did some hasty furnishing, and made some tea, and then accidentally spilled it... and my guts... emotionally, I mean. I ended up telling Taurek about everything, how I know he's [redacted]'s father, how [section redacted], and how I'm developing the bioneural processor... must have been a weird conversation. Also got to tell him a bit about dating Wyn, and we chatted a bit like friends instead of a counsellor and his patient. [https://docs.google.com/document/d/1UpL-ilV6vAdzB-OYIAJtiJn9fsP05Jl82f5j4KndChw/edit?usp=sharing| Part 1]
'''Constitution R&D log. SD 239409.11.''' I had my second visitor, and my second Vulcan of the day. Commander Saveron, who's now Acting First Officer, came up through the ESPO through the Jefferies tube. I blabbed on about how the bioneural processor and glial cell transfer aren't a big deal, without realizing he has a medical background, and so now it's like I was lying to the new FO... great job, Ji-hu... still, he's letting me go ahead with the glial cell transfer, and he asked me to take on a project for our upcoming promotion ceremony. He wants to have a holodeck party like Commander Traenor's and since I have a background in holodeck programming... only I'm going to make something so much more epic than Commander Traenor's party. I'm going to install a new holodeck processor and take the senior staff to a whole new world of adventure, romance and epicness! [https://docs.google.com/document/d/1D9aVHAp5M_OxMODzsnEJf4-4Wvkc4XENP67cIddL7LY/edit?usp=sharing| Part 1]
'''Constitution R&D log. SD 239409.12.''' I just got in from my meeting with Captain Rajel and... well, it could have gone worse? She signed off on the glial transfer procedure, and seemed confident that T'Reshik, Wyn and I would be able to get through it without hurting the subject... T'Reshik. The more people I talk to, the more worried I'm getting about it. What if I hurt T'Reshik, whose one of the closest friends I've had since Colleen... other than Wyn, of course. No, I can't think like that. I've put in more research on this one procedure than anything since Operation Overclocking. It will work, I'm sure of it. And no one's going to get hurt. '''Personal log. SD 239409.14.''' Wyn and I... uh... well. We arrived on Starbase 118 safely and we... went to the Sutro Baths, a recreation of a 20th century recreation complex. We swam, I got to see Wyn in a bathing suit... and then I got to see Wyn in less than a bathing suit... I'm actually making this log from a boat floating in the middle of "the lake," the body of water at the centre of the commercial district, we're spending the night on a little houseboat and... well... it's been a pretty big day for me, in a good way! A really, really, REALLY good way. [https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jFBThHJcMuYe6_CvysKFGWAk7M9CZYINcJ5G-KS5UoE/edit?usp=sharing| Part 1]
'''Constitution R&D log. SD 239409.15.''' Well, I presented “Symbiotic Frameworks for Starfleet's Holographic Beings” at the AI & Cybernetics Symposium on Starbase 118 and... it didn't go as terribly as I thought. Wyn gave me a nice little anti-anxiety cocktail, which got me through the hour. And then... the weirdest thing happened. Starbase 118's CSO, Commander Taelon, tracked me down and... well, basically threw my concept for the Turing Core into the fire, doused it in ignition fuel and lit it, rocketing it into the sun. Turns out... he's El-Aurian, so I guess the idea of a sentient spaceship would make him a bit uncomfortable. We talked it out and then he... of all things, agreed to sign onto the project in an advisory capacity, which is incredible. I guess now I just have to move out of the concept phase and start the thing. [https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XOzyExH-MKrRjHxG4sikjoebZsRP1b5OgjyVSpXWzKM/edit?usp=sharing| Part 1]
'''Engineering Officer's log. SD 239409.26.''' You don't often seen Kelpien in Starfleet, but we have one on the Constitution now, in fact, he's part of the ESPO... Lieutenant Berenez received a promotion and, with that, a transfer to a data crunching project on Starbase 104. The transfer of Ensign Paku came through... almost immediately and he's... very passionate about what he does. He's already submitted seventeen risk analyses on the Constitution's computational systems and general structural integrity since this morning. I really hope that's just his backlog, and that he doesn't type that fast... Anyways, we've got the Faust Control Unit installed and ready for Commander Saveron's party. I'm so excited to get Wyn into ''Dungeons & Dragons''! [https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mcj6Os4ajDzqsRy_6WEiha72FeK1P6jSFykqzp06zBs/edit?usp=sharing| Part 1]
'''Personal log. SD 239410.18.''' Well... it's been a tough week or so, but I'm starting to feel like my old self... mostly... I don't even know where to begin... I guess it started when T'Reshik and I were preparing for the glial cell transfer. I was worried about... the very real possibility of her dying, and she suggested an ancient, little known Vulcan technique, the mind meld. If she died, I could pass on a living part of her, her ''katra'', to another Vulcan. I let her, and it was... amazing and terrifying. I was different, I guess I still am different. Then we went into the surgery and it was like I was only half there, or two halves of me were there, in myself and T'Reshik. Everything was going fine, but then Wyn wanted to stop the procedure and a part of me... pushed on, and it hurt T'Reshik. That was the last I remembered for... a long time. Next thing I know I'm laying on a sick bed, like I'm coming out of some deep, dark dream. Wyn was there, and it was bad, but not as bad as it could have been. We're still together. And T'Reshik was okay. And then came the conversation with Commander Saveron and Captain Rajel, and T'Reshik got it a lot worse than me. I've been removed from my duites as office head and R&D specialist aboard the Constitution. I should have got demoted, I should have gotten a court martial for what I did to Wyn and T'Reshik. After a lot of meditation I'm able to remember practically everything... I guess nothing to do now but try to pick up the pieces.

'''Engineering Officer's log. SD 239410.17.''' ESPO's got the Faust Control Unit installed and ready for Commander Saveron's party. I'm so excited to get Wyn into ''Dungeons & Dragons''! Ensign Paku is predicting doom and gloom, but I'm starting to feel similar to Frag on the matter... guess there's a first for everything. Ensign Paku wakes up in the morning and eats doom and gloom for breakfast. I guess I have to give up my "most anxious officer aboard the Constitution" title to Paku.
