The valley is approximately 258 km (160 miles) long and 84 km (52 miles) wide, making it the largest alpine valley on Casperia Prime. The valley runs principally on a northwest to southeast axis. It is bounded on the west and at its northern point by the Tuurazum ("Great") Mountains and bounded by the Suwaxat ("Sharp") Mountain range on the east. Snow melt from the mountains feed the Sasagar ("Blue") River watershed, which winds through the Gunagari ("Foggy") Hills, the traditional southern border of the valley, and carries rich nutrients to the temperate rainforests beyond. Today, Nantahala Valley is best known for its spectacular alpine beauty, peerless winter sport recreation, and high-end hospitality. Besides tourism, the valley is has significant agriculture and mining output.
SettlementLike the rest of Casperia Prime, the Seniva Region - and Nantahala Valley by extension - was set aside for settlement under a cooperative colonization agreement between Federation members in the late 22nd century. The Seniva Region was established early on in the agreements and granted to the Betazed government for colonial administration. Initially, Nantahala Valley was largely overlooked by early settlement efforts in favor of the milder and more familiar climates (to Betazoids) closer to the coast and further south. It's now understood that the valley was first settled by a Betazoid people known as the Muachi, an obscure, nomadic tribe that maintains a hunter-gatherer way of life. Some zenologists believe they may have settled the region well before the colonization agreement was even conceived, but evidence for this theory is sparse. Official records show that Nivatara, the largest town in the valley, was incorporated almost fifty years after Seniva had begun settlement. By that time, several gentry and aristocratic Betazoid families, predominantly from the Semizad and Kharazad regions on Betazed, had staked claims in the valley and established large ranches and plantations. Growth and Independent CasperiaLoading... Dominion WarThough Casperia Prime was untouched by the Dominion War, Seniva received a large influx of Betazoid refugees both during and after the occupation of Betazed. The population of Nantahala Valley itself nearly doubled in the span of months. During this period, the peace and natural beauty of the region gained notoriety for its seeming ability to put to rest the troubled minds of those escaping the horrors of war. Although the wider Seniva region absorbed the bulk of refugees, the semi-mythic status the valley briefly attained during the war led to a rapid increase in new tourism from Betazed in the years that followed, as well as increased visitor traffic from tourists visiting other parts of the planet.
