Commander Benjamin Sisko and Chief Miles O’Brien discussing the Bardeezans

The Bardeezans are a humanoid species located in the Beta quadrant.

Home System

  • Quadrant: Beta
  • Location: Vectis System
  • Proper Name: ByzBar Vectis
  • Star: It orbits a class G (Yellow) star
  • Distance from Star: it's orbit is approximately 58 million km
  • Companions: 7 other planets. It is the 4th planet in the system, only two are inhabited.

Home World

  • Proper Name: Bardeez
    • Other names: Bardeeza[1]
  • Diameter: 12,749 km (7,968 miles)
  • Gravity: 1.06 standard gravity with a density of 5.8
  • Axial Tilt: 0.87%, no appreciable tilt and no seasons
  • Orbital Period: 471 days
  • Rotational Period: 36 hours
  • Classification: M
    • Surface Water: 58%
    • Atmosphere: 1.07 is a standard pressure with 75% nitrogen, 24% oxygen, 1% trace chemicals
    • Climate: Warm semi-tropical with tropical at the equator.
    • Population: Just over 750 million
  • Places of Interest:
    • Firefalls of Elmer - The forest of Elmer, on the western continent, is made up almost exclusively of an aggressive and hardy type of tall grass named chugduff (fire-root), which is not dissimilar to Terran bamboo. Every year, during the hottest period, the forest burns and the fire cascades over the cliffs it grows on, causing the phenomenon. The chugduff soon grows back and the cycle begins again.
    • Cairns of Los - Seven gigantic stone cairns near the ancient city of Los, located in the north of the central continent. How the cairns were built has been lost to the sands of time, which is especially mysterious, given the strong tradition of oral history on Bardeez, but it is said they house the tombs of seven ancient kings.
    • Tunnels of Nam - A vast, winding network of tunnels and catacombs under the city of Nam on the Eastern continent, built hundreds of years ago, originally as sanctuary and to aid defence in times of conflict.
    • Ifar - The largest city on Bardeez. A bustling metropolis, comparable to many cities across the galaxy. Essentially the capital of Bardeez.
    • Butterbank - Site of a historical battle that was a decisive victory for Landinam the Unifier and set the wheels in motion for the planetary peace that Bardeez enjoys today. Located towards the south of the central continent, the battlefield is little more than a beach in modern times, but is still considered a site of importance. [1]
  • Animalia
    • Kurox - Bovine-type animal, comparable to the Terran bison. Farmed for its meat and hide.
    • Sarsak - Sabre-toothed large cat. Once used as armoured war-beasts and big enough for an adult Bardeezan to ride on their backs. Now an endangered species and found only in the south of the eastern continent.
    • Marcolt - Large ape with fangs, light blue faces and paws and thick, dark blue fur covering their torsos and limbs. They also have long, dark blue tails, though their tails do not have fur. Native to the mountainous region in the north of the eastern continent.

History

A race of hardy space pioneers, the Bardeezans are traders, pilots, couriers and even smugglers. Their squat appearance, tanned complexion and hearty manner make them great drinking companions and trusted friends - so long as you don't cross them in business.

The Bardeezans have had an industrial society, all be it low scale, for several centuries. A fairly peaceful race, records of wars on their home planet between tribes are sparse. For a long time now, Bardeez has been ruled as one state.

Significant historical figures:

  • Landinam the Unifier - A warrior-Chief. Victor of the Battle of Butterbank. Credited for bringing peace to Bardeez and widely recognised as the first Chief of all Bardeez.

Government

The Bardeezans are a democracy, underpinned by universal adult suffrage and secret ballot. They elect a President (Chief) and a Cabinet of Advisors to govern the planet and control the military.

The symbol of the Chief of Bardeez is a golden, mallet-sized replica warhammer, which the Chief carries with him on official engagements.

The current Chief of Bardeez is Fairlos Namhug.

Physiology

A bearded Bardeezan male.

Bardeezans are short, stocky and tanned. Males often have facial hair, and is often braided and combed. Females are shorter and of course, beardless, but no less stocky. They possess great strength for their size and can endure harsh climates for extended periods. They are also very long lived, not reaching maturity until their 50s, and living to about 200 years, barring accidents.

Similar to the Ferengi, Bardeezan blood is yellow in colour.

One quirk of Bardeezan physiology is that they are able to drink copious amounts of alcohol and while they do suffer the effects, they very rarely (if ever) are subject to hangovers.

Psychology

Bardeezans have no psychic or empathic abilities, but being warm and welcoming in nature often put others at ease without recall to mind tricks.

Religion

Unlike a lot of modern planet societies, the Bardeezans are still fairly religious. Their deity is an omnipresent creator that permeates all reality. Given the name ‘Landi’ (or number one in their language), everything else stems from them. Devotion to Landi mostly consists of thanks giving festivals held throughout the year, involving much feasting and celebrations.

They are known to hold mid-week services at local places of worship in honour of Landi.

Mythology

Bardeezans are quite superstitious and believe that many elemental spirits live on in the landscape of their homely planet. Although their science has consistently failed to prove the existence of any of these supernatural entities, or even of the god Landi itself, they nevertheless are happy to feel a spiritual connection to their land.

Society

A Bardeezan house.

Bardeezan society is family centered and local clans and communities live happily together, often feasting in large village squares.

Respect for senior family members is strong, and children’s names are often a literal combination of their parents’ nomenclatures.

Culture

Bardeezan culture is very heavily focused on oral tradition, with songs and storytelling still very popular despite advances in modern media. Young Bardeezans are far more likely to be found sitting around a camp fire listening to an elder telling them about adventures of the past than have them being glued in front of a view screen. The use of primitive holodecks have, however, grown in popularity so they can relive the sagas of old.

A quirk of the dominant culture on Bardeez, is that people and places are numbered, so proper nouns are a phonetic pronounciation of the first nine numbers. For example, Landinam Losifar is 1-5-6-4.

  1. Landi
  2. Hug
  3. Onih
  4. Ifar
  5. Nam
  6. Los
  7. Fair
  8. Gogi
  9. Gobo

However, Bardeez is, like other worlds, a varied and diverse planet and other cultures have their own unique naming conventions.

Customs

Bardeezans are open and friendly, and treat others how they would like to be treated. This can sometimes leave them open to being taken advantage of, and they have over recent times become somewhat more suspicious of others species intents. The best way to befriend a Bardeezan is be honest and friendly, and buy them a drink.

Food & Drink

Bardeezan cuisine is often considered rather basic and bland by other cultures, however, it is filling and hearty fare, in general.

Bardeezans have seemingly insatiable appetites and they enjoy home cooked food, rather than replicated meals, where possible. While many cities on Bardeez do have restaurants offering off-world cuisine, Bardeezan food is still very much the number one choice for the native population.

Some typical Bardeezan foods include:

  • oats with nuts and fruits (usually eaten for breakfast).
  • kurox (the meat of the kurox - a bison-like animal).
  • gobbits - a potato-like vegetable cut into cubes and roasted or boiled.
  • gobbast - a mashed version of the potato-like vegetable.
  • Bardeezan honey - considered to be one of the sweetest and most sought after honeys in the Beta Quadrant.

Bardeez is also famous for its wide selection of ales and was even noted in the Beer Wine And Spirit Lover's Guide to Trill for this.

Technology

Bardeezans are space-faring with warp technology, and maintain a modern level of technology. They are primarily couriers and pilots, and contact with other races has helped them procure the latest upgrades and developments.

Economy

As mentioned above, the economy of Bardeez is trade based, and the Bardeezans are sought after as reliable trusted couriers. Fees paid to Bardeezan pilots are funneled back into the planet’s economy, and allows them the ability to finance off-world purchases. The domestic economy of Bardeez is actually agricultural, but this is increasingly under threat as the level of manpower is dwindling due to the growing number of Bardeezans being abducted by their planetary foes – the Byzallians, (see below).

Military

The Bardeezans do maintain their own defence forces, although few in number and mostly limited to low level attacks.

In 2396, the Bardeezan Defence Fleet was formed by Chief Fairlos Namhug, in response to the increasing attacks by the Byzallians. This was a significant step up in their military operations, especially their starship building.

Federation Intelligence Files

Bardeezan merchant ships have traversed the Bajoran wormhole into the Gamma Quadrant. One such ship left Deep Space Nine the night Dukat was kidnapped by the Maquis. As one of only two to do so, suspicion quickly shifted to the other ship, a Galdador freighter.
