History

The Akritirians were a warp-capable civilization native to the planet Akritiri, in the Delta Quadrant. They had an oppressive government and a system of justice that, by the standards of the Federation, was cruel, draconian and inhumane. In this system, once a person was convicted of a crime, the conviction could not be overturned, even if conclusive evidence that proves his innocence was uncovered. The person in question would still be sentenced to life in a brutal prison, the Akritirian maximum security detention facility. There the prisoners were induced to kill each other through synaptic manipulation.

A violent group called Open Sky acted against the government. Although considered terrorists by the government, they regarded themselves as patriots.

In 2373, Ensign Harry Kim and Lieutenant junior grade Tom Paris, respectively the Operations officer and Flight Controller on the Federation starship USS Voyager, were accused by the Akritirian authorities of carrying out an Open Sky bombing and imprisoned in the Akritirian maximum security detention facility. When Voyager's captain, Kathryn Janeway, captured the actual persons behind the bombing, the Akritirian ambassador, Liria, refused to have Paris and Kim released due to Akritirian court convictions' irreversibility. Captain Janeway led a mission to rescue the two officers, after which Voyager quickly left Akritirian space.

Government

They have a dictator style government with the leader of the government holding office for life. His word is law.

Description

The Akritirian are a humanoid species that look like humans except that they have a distinguishable ridge in the centre of the forehead with several horizontal smaller ridges branching off. They are all fair skinned with dark brown to black hair.

Physiology

They may look faintly human but their system is radically different with numerous unique organs and hormonies.

Psychology

They tend to be prone to a number of unique mental abnormalities.

Religion

It has been banned by the government and is considered to be an illegal activity.

Mythology

Legends and myths have been banned and deleted from almost every data file. What few copies still survive are well hidden but ownership results in a prison term.

Society

They have an extremely controlled society with the dictator having complete control over everything.

Culture

They use epic poetry, performed by talented orators as a means of entertainment. These can be performed in any park, court or clearing.

Customs

Pardons or rehearings in convictions and sentencing are never heard; felons are kept in an isolated spacegoing station - as the USS Voyager's Paris and Kim discovers when wrongly sent there. Prisoners are fitted with neurotransmitter clamps that stimulate an adrenaline based reaction, enhancing their aggressive tendencies. Because of this, the prison facilities are without guards or doctors, leaving the inmates to roam freely in the the hopes that they will kill one another.

Technology

Slightly behind the norm for most Federation member species.

Economy

They have a fairly strong economy with trade being conducted with a few near by worlds.

Military

They have a medium sized military force with the planetary police composed of their heavily trained infantry. Every community regardless of size has at least a few men as a garrison.
