They are humanoids, very much like humans, and seem to share a close visual resemblance. They maintain a societal structure which can best be described as kingdom based, and attained warp capability forty years ago (2340). It seems that they would have made fine additions to the Federation had the Ferengi not contacted them first, about five years before us. This, of course, led to unfortunate bias against us, a close relationship to the Ferengi.
