John is the son of an Irish father and Portuguese mother. He has inherited the temper of an Irishman and the fire of the Portuguese mother, making him an often impulsive and action-oriented character.

Mac's mother: Maria Figo, was born in Ribiera Grande, Azores. She was a school teacher until her retirement 5 years ago. His mother died recently while Mac was on his cadet cruise. He was unable to attend the funeral.
Mac's father, Michael (Mick) Macpherson, was a career diplomat on Earth, although his sphere of influence was limited to local politics. Nevertheless, Mac's father was a key figure in his young life. Mac is unsure how his father will be able to cope without his mother.
