- a Oxygene saying.
- "Our atmosphere is not soupy, sludge. Yours is painfully thin."
- The Oxygene are a humanoid species native to a world with a high oxygen content. Due to this they usually require special breathing apparatus when in atmospheres with a noticeably lower oxygen content.

History
Their history is a peaceful one of co-operation and mutual respect. In all of their history there is not even one recorded instance of violence being used against another member of their own species. In fact violence was completely unknown to them until they had progressed to the point where they were able to build space craft.
After contact and exposure to other species they learned about the need to defend themselves and were able to trade with and pay other species for the weapons needed to arm their merchant ships. These offensive weapon systems are fully automated.
They still enjoy a relatively peaceful existence with few visitors to their world. This has nothing to do really with the high oxygen content of their atmosphere and more to do with the fact that there really is nothing that interesting to attract off worlders.
Government
They have a council with representatives from each region and based on the population. As a result the current council has more than 5,000 reps, all of whom have the same authority and voting power.
Strangely enough the council meetings are quiet, ordered and restrained. Discussions are spirited but respectful and everyone willingly waits their turn. Unfortunately this means that it can sometimes take days before an issue has been properly discussed and a decision can be made and yet this is more of a rare occurrence than the norm. They are able to achieve a surprising amount of co-operation among themselves.
Description
They are a humanoid species that has no hair anywhere on their body. They also have a smooth rounded oval head with small holes on the sides of their head for ears and 2 small slits where their nose is. Their skin is thick with a mottled orange, yellowish tones. On average they are about 5’5” to 5’10” and about 140 lbs. to 180 lbs.
Physiology
As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes, however they require a higher than normal level of oxygen content in the air that they breathe in order to survive. They can survive for short periods of time in atmospheres with a lower or minimal oxygen content but usually not more than once a day as it puts to heavy a strain on their system.
Psychology
As a species they tend to be very stable mentally. There are very few documented cases of mental disease among their people. Other than that they tend to manage stress very well, have a high tolerance to pain and adjust well to unusual conditions. Strangely enough while they will use weapons purchased from other species it would never occur to them to learn how to build or repair such illogical devices.
Religion
They have no form of religious beliefs, merely an educated understanding of the universe and their place in it. Even a close examination of their historical records would seem to indicate that they never developed any belief system.
Mythology
Strangely enough they do have a well developed and rich history of tall tales and legends. These revolve around mythical people who dealt with unusual problems and learned from their mistakes. As a whole they seem to be more like fables, each one with an important lesson to teach.
Society
They have a well ordered society with well designed cities, an excellent infrastructure, no pollution and a social assistance system that ensures that all citizens have the same rights, chances and opportunities as every one else. They have almost no crime and their medical facilities treat everyone free of charge, even visitors to their world.
Culture
Visually they enjoy wild explosions of bright vibrant colors. As a result there are paintings, murals, tapestries and other forms of visual art expressions found everywhere. The one unifying theme for almost all of them is the use of color.
While they have music it does not figure into their normal means of artistic expression nearly as much as the visual colors do. For them it is more of a gently rhythmic background noise used to make various spaces seem or feel more relaxed and peaceful.
Customs
Sleep Chamber
While it is not technically a custom a very large majority of the population sleep every night inside their own special, customized hyperbaric chamber bed. This activity has been a part of their society for more than 200 years and each year more and more of them have converted over to this method of sleeping.
Oxygen Bars
Almost every community and most definitely every city has at least one if not a number of these establishments. Simply put they are a kind of tavern where a flavored and intoxicating mist is pumped into a face mask that is held against the face while a button is pushed to activate the mist. The mist is mixed with 73% pure oxygen.
Technology
They have a very good understanding of how certain gasses affect living tissue. As a result they build and design some of the best hyperbaric chambers to be found anywhere. Their ability to tweak each design to perfectly meet the needs of the species for which they were built have made them the leaders in this field.
In all other fields they tend to be slightly behind most other Federation member worlds. Also they have never spent any time researching any weapons or offensive systems. They trade for all of these and depend on other species for maintenance and repair.
Economy
On top of being the source for the best hyperbaric chambers available they have a strong economy with numerous long term trading partners. Even with out this they would be fairly well off as they have the capability to produce just about everything they need themselves.
Strangely enough even though they have one of the safest planets around with almost no crime it has never been that much of a tourist location. They do not produce or consume any alcohol, have no nightclubs or entertainment locations and no facilities for art or historical preservation open to the public.
Military
Due to the unusually high levels of oxygen in their atmosphere they have never had to worry about alien occupation or aggression. As a result they have never had to develop a military.
This changed after they developed the ability to build space craft and all of their freighters are heavily armed. However their merchant fleet is not very big and would probably not be able to stop any real invasion attempt. All of the weapon and offensive systems are purchased from other species and maintained by them as well. They are also completely automated and programed to fire only after being fired upon.
Federation Intelligence Files
In 2370, while discussing interspecies relationships with Ensign Melora Pazlar, Lt. Jadzia Dax used the story of a Lothra and an Oxygene who had fallen in love and were only able to spend forty minutes a day together without their breathing apparatus to illustrate how Pazlar and Doctor Bashir could find a way to make a relationship work. According to Dax, the couple were together 57 years despite the difficulties.
Sources
Both Memory Alpha and Memory Beta were used as sources as well as the TV episode DS9: Melora.
