Welcome to 118Wiki, a collaborative database for the UFOP: StarBase 118 Star Trek RPG. The purpose of this Wiki is to give members of our community a place to collaboratively build a history of our characters, ships, and plots.

This page our Wiki will introduce you to editing. Because everyone is free to edit any page on the wiki, learning how to edit pages -- and the etiquette of editing -- is important to participating. Let's get started!

User Page

Make sure you're logged in to the wiki using the username and password that was sent to you after training. If you look at the top of the page you're on right now, you'll see a small list of links, the leftmost link being your username.

Your user page is about you, the writer. This is different than the pages you will create for your characters. There's only one writer (you!), but you can have many characters -- that's why you only have one user page.

Here would follow an introduction what to put in a user page, what better not, how to handle the talk. It could be taken mostly from the resources of the Q&A of the old new user page. Maybe a hint that new users could also skip this part would be a good idea idea, too (cause you can play without a user page but not without a character page).


Character Page

Using the wiki, you can create a very rich and detailed character page with information about your character, an archive of sims, and much more. This tutorial will show you the basics for creating a basic character page.

Creating the Character Page

Before you can create a character page, it's helpful to understand how to create a page, and how to name it properly. Please read the content of the link below:

Now let's come to the question how to use your character page. Now, our goal in naming a page is first to make it unique. But we also need to make it easy to find the page. Sure, search would probably pull up a page as long as you know e.g. a character's first or family name. But let's be honest: We don't want to look through all the Williams, all the Smiths and whatever names else. Therefore we're highly recommending to use one way of naming your character pages. It increases the simplicity and efficiency of finding your character pages by far. We need to be careful, however, not to be too specific. For example your rank will change at the next promotion, so we don't want to include it as part of the name because we want conformity with others. So, what about the character's name. While there are some peoples, lile the Ferengi, who seem not to use surnames, most people have a family name and one or more given names. Middle names, if they are not used all the time, can be dropped. Putting the last name first is usually the best, because we're using ranks normally in SIM, most people are known as something like "Ensign Smith". Last names are slightly more common in SIM than first names, so people will likely look for the last name first. In the rare case that your character is more commonly known by their "first" name, then you might want to change this a little. For example a bartender who is always adressed might be an exception of the rule. Playing a Bajoran, a Chinese or a character from another culture that puts family names first you may do so on his/her character page.

Now that you have read about how to create and name pages correctly you can proceed with creating your own character page.

Before you begin, keep in mind that you are free to add and edit as much as you wish. The following examples of character pages are just "starting points" to work from.

How to add Categories

Once you have selected the type of character page you will use you will need to add the following information to the bottom of the page. Read the next section carefully to make sure you do not miss anything.

All pages on the wiki should be categorized. The category tag(s) should be the last text on the page, one to a line.

The Paelians (Paelian: tʃʊpal) are amphibian humanoids native to three worlds: Paelia (Paelian: palæia) in the Pael System, Nera (Paelian: neɪlɪa) in the Nera system and Nemea (Paelian: væraja) in the Nemea system. In 2339 they joined the Federation together with another allied species, weenjens.

Public institutions

Since the Paelian history declined the idea of a state, there can be no governement or executive branch found. Yet there are some institutions founded by Paelians that could be considered as public. Their influence differs between the different peoples on Paelia, Nera and Nemea. Never has any of these institutions claimed political might. As the Bolians society in general, they work on the basis of complete individual freedom.

Town center watch

Beginning as a family clan's storage of goods that were willingly exchanged, these storages developed soon to the centers of early settlements. Any Paelian (and later any alien) is allowed to hand over what he/she/xe likes to give to the community or take whatever he/she/xe thinks to need. All kinds of goods could be delivered and later even services (e.g. cooking fresh meals)could be performed. Since the life period of some goods differ very much and Paelians would not like to waste e.g. decayed food, in many cultures some Paelians volunteered to watch out for the goods stored at the town center. This way they ensured that goods that could no longer be stored were used either by the watch or by people to whom the watch delivered these goods.

When the range of Paelian goods increased the town center watch changed, too. Instead of central storages the Paelians developed smaller storages for specific types of goods. The watch had to specialize to understand their storages' goods' qualities and life periods. Soon they started to offer advise for the 'customers' coming to their store. Although Paelians never developed any kind of currency and the exchange managed by the watch was absolutely non-capitalistic, Starfleet officers at first contact mistook the watch for Salesmen.

Political debate circles

The political debate circles resemble the closest thing to a government or to a parliamentary. Many Paelian peoples have developed such fora of exchange on pressing matters. In most cases these circles met originally near the town centers and simply discussed social issues. In early times people randomly discussed how to stop e.g. a famine or how to expand the town. They had no power to put their ideas into practice than their own. Therefore they invited other people that were not interested in those discussions themselves. To handle these masses of people, they couldn't meet at the town centers and often they built assembly halls. Many public institutions originate are the result of a circle's discussion.

At first contact, Starfleet thought those circles to be either parliamentary or government of the Paelian people. It took some time until they realized that they didn't encounter basic democrazy but just people discussing common problems. Federation scholars needed very long to understand how such institutions could work without any political power.

Tribunal of conscience

Another important element of many Paelian cultures are institutions which Starfleet translated as tribunals of conscience. In these very special courts, judgedment would only be passed on people on basis of their own conscience. Believing in absolute freedom, nobody could be commited to a trial. Without any specific defintion of crime anybody who think to have acted badly could come here.

In ancient times, the methods how to get an idea of someone's morality differed very much from culture to culture. At some places, long questionnaires would have to be filled in, at other places people had to judge case examples. Science opened new ways, though. Nowadays, special scans would be arranged to find out almost without any kind of inaccurateness.

Only if someone had come freely to the tribunal, introduced his/her/xer conscience to the three judges, he/she/xe could confess his/her/xer crimes. Afterwards, the three judges would decide what would be the appropriate punishment according to the committer's conscience. Depending on the culture, it would be left to the committer if the judgement would be executed or not. Some Paelians argued that the knowledge of the punishment could change someone's mind and that it would only be fair that he must freely decide it to be executed. Others countered that only because someone is scared by the punishment, his/her/xer decision to attent a trial should not be disrespected. Therefore the punishment would be executed even against someone's free will.

Schools

Instead of an educational system, Paelians preferred a lose concept of different institutions. Anybody thinking themselves capable to teach could become a teacher and anybody willing to come to the lessons, could come. Although no courses were obligatory, attending school became usual for most Paelians. The free choice of courses caused some problems but it allowed Paelians also to specialice in their professions very much.

Everybody could hand in papers at all kinds of courses, everybody could present those to class, everybody could ask for a talk with the teacher. But there were no class exercises of any kind. Teachers did not test their students trusting in their decision to freely intensify their studies.

Until now it is a very common problem for Paelians to attend Starfleet Academy. Acceptance tests for Starfleet Academy are quite challenging for someone coming from a culture that didn't have tests at all. The diversity of knowledge tested by Starfleet proved also quite stressing for Paelian applicants. After 30 years without any succeeding applicant for Starfleet Academy, on all three Paelian homeworlds special schools were founded to prepare Starfleet Academy applicants for the acceptance tests. In the beginning these institutions had a hard time but became accepted in the course of time.

Paelian History

The antecessing species that later became the Paelians originally inhabited the oceans of their first homeworld, Paelia. They were gregarious sentient beings living in swarms of about 50 to 90 Prae-Paelians. Due to change of the tectonic plates of Paelia, the continents and oceans ceased to exist. Instead huge archipelagos developed while some single islands remained as remnants of what used to be Paelia's continents. Due to the change of Paelia's surface, many food sources of the Prae-Paelians ran dry. The relative large predators of the deep ocean had no chance hunting fishes that could now easily escape to the waters between the islands where the Prae-Paelians couldn't follow.

This massive change of environment led to the development of the Proto-Paelians. Only half as big as their predecessor they could easily sweep through the archipelagos where their food hid. But still they lacked food sources. Very slowly some Proto-Paelians developed lungs additionally to their gills. These had better chances to survive and eventually this new species, the earlies Paelians, replaced the Proto-Paelians.

Slowly the new species developed at the coasts of the small and bigger islands of Paelia. They started as swimming nomads migrating from one island to another. After some thousand years passed some of the Paelian peoples started to settle. Especially those swarms with a taste for vegetables next to fish and meat settled down. Living in holes, caves or nests build by themselves they began growing agricultural plants while smaller parts of the swarm continued to hunt on land and under water.

Those early settlements started to differentiate professions. Of course hunters would still help at harvest but nontheless there were soon some professional farmers who took care of the seeding and oversaw the harvest. Other Paelians experimented with different techniques how to serve their new foods best. When most swarms decided that they'd need to share their hunted fish, meat, grain and other plants, they created the town centers where they would gather all their goods and from where everyone could take whatever one would need.

Not long after these first settlements were established they started to produce tools and other goods. The nomadic swarms arranged trade between the different swarms that had settled down. This way technical progress sooner or later spread among all Paelians. Although most swarms expanded their in most cases natural dwellings the population of the swarms overcame the living space. While some of the offspring joined nomadic swarms or founded their own swarms, people argued that they need to find ways to expand their settlements. First huts were constructed and next to rivers and streams first villages developed.

Not long after the first settlements grew to villages and small towns, swarms living close to each others fused. When the natural waterways weren't big enough to cover the needs of the Paelians they started building canals. On the newly created islands they build more huts and first houses. In the long run, basements and upper floors were developed to provide even more living space for the Paelians. Space was badly needed indeed because the farmers and hunters provided more and more food for the community by constantly new reinventing their methods.

The beginning of urban societies neccessitated more specialized professions. Who would build the houses if not construction workers. Who would keep the waterways and pipes clean if not plumbers. Who would produce the metal goods they needed if not smiths. The more professions developed, the less one central town center could provide enough space to store all the goods produced. In larger towns mutliple centers were created only to store goods of one kind. Metalware, furs, leather and draperies, wood products and food were the earliest seperate stores. When the cities became even bigger instead of centers people started to build smaller stores with a more specialized range of products and many of the former town centers became marketplaces. The people still kept up the concept of freely giving and taking any goods.

It was a long road from those early artisanry to Paelian industrialization. It was a road they constantly sought, though. Of course it was hard for the creators of the earliest manufactories to find workers. They had to convince them to do the work they asked them to do. Only when the Paelians saw the advantages of those factories they started to believe in the neccessity of such institutions. In order not to exploit their workers, 1 and 2 hour shifts became quite usual for factories. Factory workers would work in other professions as well where they could manually work on one product from the beginning to the end. This way it was ensured people would not fatigue because they only work at one production step.

In the course of history, some inventions led to great problems like pollution, overproduction, famine and other crises all being successfully overcome. Innovation but also revision of methods usually provided solutions for the Paelian peoples. Although from early times onwards scientists, explorers and inventors tried to give advice, some tragedies were irrevisible. For example their hunts caused the extinction of a species of carnivore fish which was later revealed to be related to their antecessor species, the Proto-Paelians. None of these catastrophes prohibited the Paelians from a progress that led to spacefaring in the very end, though.

In the early 17th century, first Paelian spaceships reached one of the four Paelian moons. In the 20st century, on all four natural sattelites people had settled. During this time, they had also managed to explore the wonders of their own solar system. While the spaceships they used for all these tasks, were not bigger than 100 meters, some Paelian scientists had started to propose building gigantic spaceships since the 19th century. The decision to participate in such an undertaking was not made easily. Even in the 21st century when the construction of the first giant spaceship began, many Paelians remained sceptic until the construction was finished. It took over 50 years to finish the first spaceship that was supposed to leave the Pael system.

In 1974 it set off with about 15,000 Paelians aboard. The spaceship consisting of three rings all connected by a single bulky cross member to a sphere in the middle. All of the ship's impulse engines were located at the three rings. Due to the rings' ability to swiftly move around the sphere the ship could be easily maneuvered in space. In the sphere around two thirds of the travelers lived while the technicians and the crew lived in the rings. Due to the length of their journey there was a constant exchange of people volunteering to work in the rings and people retiring to the sphere. Living inside the ship's core was appreciated because the sphere was a biosphere resembling Paelia. During some peoriods the conept of only volunteers working in the rings could not be kept up. Some historians assume that this was one major event to cause a change in the Paelian emigrants' social structure.

Their arrival at a class-M world in 2092 was another milestone in Paelian history. From now on there were no longer single Paelian sub-cultures but also two Paelian kinds seperated by a traveling distance of over 100 years. The foundation of Nemea proved to be harder than expected. Although they had brought much of Paelia's flora and fauna along it took far over 50 years to finally establish nature as they knew it. Had they known, it would cause a deadly war between native flora and fauna and alien nature, they might have reconsidered importing Paelian animals and plants. Containing DNA samples and a detailed report about the colonisation of Nemea their spaceship set off to Paelia in 2151.

When it returned to the Pael system in 2243, the Paelian had known of its return many years before due to a major improvement of sensor range. While they had waited for the ship to return, the Paelians had also improved the construction plans of their first spaceship. One of the major improvements, the new ship would feature flora and fauna in the rings, too. The ship's speed was also greatly increased. Given the advice not to introduce animals or plants from Paelia to their new homeworld, the second colony vessel set off with about 18,000 Paelians aboard in 2344.

In 2381 the second big spaceship reached a world that Paelian scientists had watched for quite a while and estimated to feature all vital characteristics necessary for Paelians. Arriving there, Nera appeared like paradise to the Paelian colonists. As soon as the first settlements were constructed they sent their ship homeward with a report so that more people could come to this world. Not just that there was an abundant amount of water but also were there only violet and blue plants. Paelians had known only green plants as they exist on most planets and were highly surprised by the beauty of Nera's colours.

Unknown to the first Paelian emigrants, Paelia had been under attack four times by Klingon marauders while the spaceships were traveling to far away worlds. The Klingons had attacked first in 1988, some years after the first colony ship had left the Pael system. They judged the Paelian homeworld to be an interesting target due to its high level of technology. But very soon they noticed that the Paelians didn't resist at all. Instead they tried, so the Klingons thought, to bribe them by offering them goods. Affected by this misunderstanding three birds of prey wiped out entire cities by torpedo air raid. Afterwards they abused many of the Paelians, killed others and damaged further settlings while plunderin and marauding all on Paelia's surface. But although they wiped out three rather large cities, extremely damaged others and killed many thousands, not a single Paelian fought against the Klingons. Not just because Paelians didn't have any weaponry but also because it was not part of their culture to fight. They didn't see any need to prolong the evil of war as it was waged for the first time against them.

In 1995 the very same Klingon marauders returned. When they didn't encounter any sort of resistance again they stopped attacking Paelia. Only very few people were killed this time. These Klingons didn't seem to see any honour in slaying defenceless people.

Later that year other Klingons came to Paelia. Obviously, the marauders had spread a rumour about Paelia. These Klingons didn't fight very long either but they plundered for months. Hundreds of Paelians starved while the Klingons feasted on the Paelian food. Others abused and killed for fun. It took five and a half months until the Klingons were fed up with the Paelians leaving them alone. Without any of the Klingons being aware of it, the Paelians had resisted this time. They had stored food at secret storages waiting for their oppressor to leave. When the Klingons finally set off assuming to leave a dying world behind, the Paelians could have breathed a sigh of relief (if they had known that gesture).

Afterwards, no Klingons or other agressors returned for a very long time. Instead, the Paelian ships did encounter a species. The Weenjens were a peaceful species that had decided to visit one of the Paelian homeworlds. Their first trip led them to Nemea, the world where Paelians behaved a bit different but still offered hospitality to the Weenjens. They exchanged some goods in ancient Paelian manner although the Weenjen were a bit confused the lack of money. Nemean Paelians had developed some duties like twenty years as a farmer but they had not come up with currencies keeping up their Paelian heritage.

When the Weenjens encountered the Paelian Paelians and the Neran Paelians they didn't believed it to be the same species. While life on Nemea was full of discomfort and every pound of food was fought for Paelia and Nera seemed to be paradises by contrast. None of the Paelians knew how extreme the conditions on the other planets were of course due to their lack of warp travel. Only when the Weenjens allowed them to use some vessels of their own, the Paelians could see how terrible life was on Nemea. But even though life was tough on the first Paelian colony it had created a very special kind of Paelians.

By closing long term trading contracts - its neccessity was not understood too well by the Paelians - the Weenjens and Paelians became close allies. They exchanged star charts, technology and experiences with other spacefaring peoples. The Weenjens, a species as peaceloving as the Paelians but eagerly defending what is theirs, had made as bitter experiences with the Klingons as the Paelians had. This shared fear for the Klingons would become a main reason for both species to join the Federation.

The last Klingon attack on a Paelian world occured late in their history, shortly before joining the Federation. It occured in 2372 on Nemea, the first colony. A full invasion fleet and army had come for the world whose tough hunters and defenders against the beasts of Nemea had earned them a less peaceful reputation. At least that was the Klingon's speculation hearing about these Paelians during one of their raids on the Weenjens. But even though the Paelians were indeed very different from other Paelians they did not resist the Klingons actively. They didn't share their goods and hid what they had toilsome produced but they did not fight. But the Weenjens did so when their sensors had noticed the Klingon presence in the Nemea system. It was a two day lasting battle in the Nemea system between two uneven opponents. The small Weenjen fighters maneuvered better than the Klingon cruisers and birds of prey but in the end their lack of fire power was their doom. The same occured on the ground where Weenjen militia fought against the Klingon troops.

Eagerly Starfleet made the Weenjens and Paelians join the United Federation of Planets to set an example for the Klingon Empire with which the Federation was at war at that time. In early 2373 Paelia, Nera and the devastated Nemea as well as the Weenjen homeworld Ween Jen joined the Federation. The Klingons lost a source for ressources but didn't try to conquer the worlds. Precious food, some rare gases and other useful materials were not worth starting a second front so close to their own borders.

During the Dominion War some Paelians, mostly from Nemea, decided for a Starfleet carrear. They applied to become nurses, medical officers and other specialists who would not be directly involved into fighting. Many of them returned home after the war, traumatized for a lifetime after having to kill intelligent life. Very few got along with it and continued their carrears, though. Due to those staying, Paelians maintained to send candidates for Starfleet Academy.
