((Sickbay))

::Makal hated the sickbay. He wondered for a brief foment if Eliaan had remembered that the half-bajoran had still not been in for his physical, but then quickly returned his mind to the fact the Kali was there, laying asleep on a biobed.::

::Eliaan immediately felt more relaxed as he entered sickbay. He led Lt Kora to the biobed, where Kaedyn Tann was checking on Nicholotti.::

Deron: What is Lt Nicholotti’s condition?

Tann: She remains stable; vital signs are stronger than before. She’s definitely on the mend.

Deron: Sounds to me like she is ready to be woken up.  ::Turning to Kora:: She’s been through a lot, she may be a little groggy when we wake her... also, there’s no telling what effect the the trauma has had on her psychologically.

Kora: ::Makal nodded, and hid the nervousness in his voice.:: Understandable.

::The Trill nurse prepared the hypospray and passed it to Eliaan. He pressed it against the sleeping woman’s neck and waited for her to wake up. Nothing happened.::

((Kali's Dreamscape))

::Kali woke suddenly, as if something had pulled the blanket of sleep away from her without warning. She slowly stood, looking around her. Once again, however, the eternal nightfall of her dreams had fallen once more. She had to wonder when, or even if, anyone would bother to come look for her. No, she decided. She would have faith that her friends would come.::

::Unable to simply close her eyes again and drift away, she set off in the direction she had been heading the day before. Though she could not see it, she could imagine the dusky grey landscape surrounding her. The sky itself seemed to suck the light out of her very vision, and her stomach did flips as she remembered the last time she went walking through the dark.::

((Sickbay))

Deron: Kaedyn, is this the correct dosage?

Tann: Yes, I double checked it.

Deron: Hmm... That should have woken her... ::looking at the biofunction monitors:: ... there’s no physiological reason that she’d still be unconscious. There is an increase in brain activity; it’s almost as if she is just asleep.

::The three men stood around the biobed, looking down at the sleeping marine. Makal let out a sigh and crossed his arms.::

Kora: Something mental maybe?

Deron: It is certainly possible that since she’s been through such a traumatic experience that she doesn’t want to wake up.

Kora: I find that hard to believe with Kali.

((Kali's Dreamscape))

::Kali walked along in the dark with every intention of finding her way home. Slowly, the nagging feeling of being followed assaulted her. Vague flashes of light caught her peripheral vision, as if pieces of metal were reflecting light from some unknown place. Panic threatened once again to take over, but she used her self discipline to push it away. Even so, she could not prevent the fear from growing.::

::Trying to put the follower out of her mind, she set her eyes towards the ultimate goal. She would get home somehow.::

((Sickbay))

::The Betazoid could sense her thoughts; they were less jumbled and abstract than they had been while she was sedated. He could also sense an overwhelming feeling of fear from her.::

Deron: She’s scared. Kali, its Eliaan. You’re on the Resolution, in sickbay. You are safe.

::Nothing.::

Deron: You try.

::Makal felt a little silly, but at the same time he remembered his own coma, and the voices that had brought him back around. He cleared his throat and crouched down by the biobed, so his voice would easily be heard, his face close to the sleeping woman.::

Kora: Kali? It's Makal. Eliaan and I are here... you are safe with us. Can you hear me?

::Again there was no response from Nicholotti. Makal looked back to the other two men, the stresses of the last two days showing on his face.::

Kora: We might not be the right people to do this...

((Kali's Dreamscape))

::The first sounds in what seemed like days licked at her ears as if teasing her. Straining, she recognized both of them. Looking around, she desperately tried to find their source, but being unable to see anything in the dark, the search was hopeless. She fell to her knees at what she soon felt was the edge of the cliff she had been walking along. She ran her hands across the sharp rocks on the very edge.::

((Sickbay))

Deron: We’re probably closer to her than anyone else on the ship, if anyone can get her to come back it will be one of us... we just have to get through to her.

::Makal sighed and stood, looking at Eliaan.::

Kora: I know this might seem personal... but can you maybe... speak with her telepathically? Or if you think it would help, have all three of us connected?

Deron: I can try.

::Taking a deep breath the Betazoid opened his mind to the thoughts of his two friends, acting as a conduit so that despite not being telepathic, Lt Kora could also communicate with her.::

Deron:<<Kali, its Eliaan and Makal. Wake up, you are safe.>>

((Kali's Dreamscape))

::The thought resounded through her mind like a scream. The whispers were gone, and this was not something she had heard before. Had they really come after her?::

oO Eliaan! Oo ::She screamed inside her head.:: oO Makal...Oo

::Eliaan shot a hopeful look to the Science officer. Makal closed his eyes and focused his mind like he had done before as a Vedek...::

Deron: <<We’re here, Kali. You are going to be okay, just come back to us. >>

Kora: <<Kali. Come to the sound of our voices... we're in the real world, where you belong.>>

::With something to focus on, she no longer cared about the dreamscape. The glinting of metal in the distance could no longer touch her. Taking solace in the fact that her friends had come after her, she stood. The solidness of the dream seemed to fade, and she felt as if her body was once again drifting. She clenched her fists and stiffened, fighting to leave it all behind.::

Tann: Doctor, she’s moving...

Kora: <<That's it! Keep fighting damn you!>>

::Kali was once again acutely aware of a burning pain in her chest. She was sore, and it hurt to breathe. Slowly, the feeling of swimming through glue left her, and she felt the solid surface of the biobed beneath her. Struggling, she managed to open her eyes, and at the sight of her friends, she allowed the tears to fall.::

Deron: ::smiling:: Welcome back

Kora:  ::smiling warmly, happy that something had gone right:: You gave us quite a scare there, Kali. Welcome back to the land of the living.

Deron: Kaedyn, can you get me a painkiller for Lt Nicholotti?

Tann: Of course ::the nurse prepared the hypospray and as he handed it to Deron, spoke quietly to him:: Eliaan, remember the briefing starts shortly.

::As the Betazoid nodded, Kali regained her composure and struggled to pull herself up.::

Nicholotti: Don't leave...::She begged the doctor with her eyes.:: I want to see the others. oO Jaxx... Oo

::She tried to slide off the biobed, but the soreness got the better of her. Catching herself on the edge of the bed, she did her best to stand up straight. Making every attempt to straighten out her post surgical outfit, a set of plain looking scrubs, she tried to show the two men that she was able and ready to go.::

::The Betazoid placed his hand on her shoulder and spoke in a soft voice.::

Deron: Kali, you were stabbed in the chest. The knife collapsed your lung and pierced your heart. I was able to fix your lung and other injuries but... ::he paused for a second:: ... Commander Turner and I operated on your heart; we weren’t able to fix the damage and had to replace it with an artificial one.

::Kali's head swam and she had to lean back against the bed to keep her from falling over.::

Deron: It will work just as well as your old heart, and will probably work longer than any of your other organs but your body has been through a major trauma and you are going to need to give yourself time to heal.

Nicholotti: I... ::The enormous gratitude that she felt for the doctor at that moment was epic in proportions. She spoke quietly.:: I know.
