History
They started out as nomadic tribesmen, but over time many of these tribes settled on good reliable water sources. From this grew the present city states, which cover most of the planet. There are still a few nomadic tribes moving from one small water hole to the next and a small class of nomadic merchants that travel from city to city.
This planet is still considered a primitive world as the native species have not yet progressed beyond simple wind and muscle tools. Due to the vast deserts that cover most of the surface each city state is placed so that it can guard its vital water resources. These resources usually take the form of oasis and deep wells.
Government
Each individual city state is completely 100% independent and they all tend to fight among themselves. For the most part most of these city states are ruled by a male king. However there are exceptions. A couple have female rulers and a few have religious rulers.
Description
As a species they tend to be very similar. Males grow to be about 5 foot with light but well muscled forms. Females are generally a little shorter and slimmer. Their skin tone is a very dark crimson with ebony black hair. The men keep their hair cut very short and tend to have very thick facial hair that is also kept cut very short. The females wear theirs longer, usually down to the middle of the back.
Both males and females wear robes. These tend to be tan or cream in color and extend down to the ground and include a hood that can be thrown up over the head to protect them from the sun. While females usually wear nothing under the robe most males wear an elaborate leather harness that includes a loin cloth and heavy, reinforced sandals and armbands. Usually attached to this harness would be at least a couple knives and maybe a short sword.
In times of war many weapons can be secured to this harness and the robe would be replaced with a hooded cloak.
Physiology
They are a hardy species, well adapted to survival in the harsh deserts they live in. Their skin tone protects them from the majority of sun related skin issues. They also have a set of specialized water containment pouches within their main torso that allows them to consume large amounts of water and survive for up to 4 days in the hot sun with out needing to take a drink. In an emergency they can regurgitate this fluid for use by someone else.
Psychology
They are a very hard, brutal and disciplined people. Survival and the constant possibility of attack have forced them to become detached to the suffering of others. In fact the practice of torturing enemy soldiers is for most considered the only way to deal with an injured enemy.
Religion
This is a very complex and confusing subject. For the most part they all have a pantheon of gods they believe in. However they can vary quite radically from one region to another. Not only in number, but description, name, powers and abilities. The only thing that does stay constant is that each and every city state has selected a single deity as their patron god or goddess.
Mythology
While these may vary from region to region they have a massive set of confusing and interlocking tales about the constant infighting between the various gods and how it affects the people who worship them. One of the oldest tales is about a war between the gods and goddess’s that turned their world into a desert wasteland.
Society
Women do 75% of the day to day labor in any city state. The rest is done by retired warriors. Because of this females are never attacked even if a city is invaded and sacked. Also due to the fact that many warriors never survive to reach the age where they are allowed to mate, when they do, they usually have 2 to 6 wives.
Culture
Music and dancing are really the only form of artistic expression found among the city states. While stone carvings can be found in many cities these are not considered art. While they are usually exceptional works they are created to immortalize a fallen warrior or as representations of their patron deity. Only men create statues and only females create art in the form of music, song and dance.
Customs
Age of Induction
At the age of 6 every boy is taken and placed into barracks where they will live and train until graduation. This training is brutal, harsh and violent. On average between one quarter and one half of the boys will not survive the training.
Graduation
Upon reaching the age of 15 they are now ready to join the ranks of the cities defenders. In order to do this they are issued with their weapons, some food, a water bag and a sack. Then they are sent out of the city to prove their right to be allowed to join the warriors by killing a soldier belonging to another city. They may not return until they do. As proof they must return with a trophy, usually the head of the man they killed. When they do return they collect their belongings and move from the boys barracks to the warriors barracks where they will stay until they have reached manhood.
Manhood
Having survived 10 years of combat as a warrior the male has proven that he is now a man. A huge celebration is planned. It is during this party that he is rewarded for his service to his city. This reward will be 2 females who are bonded to him as his wives. They are selected for him and will usually be women he has never met before. If he is a warrior who has achieved glory on the battlefield then he may be given more than 2 wives. Some of the greatest heroes of legend were rewarded with as many as 10 wives.
Technology
No technology of any kind other than windmills. Everything else is muscle powered. They have mastered metal working and can produce some very excellent primitive hand to hand weapons.
Economy
There is very little trade between the various city states. The only exception to this are a number of nomadic merchants who move from one city to the next living by trade. Strangely enough they never get attacked and do not fall under the rule that anyone not from your city is an enemy and to be killed on sight.
Military
Every single male in each city state is trained as a warrior. This training starts as soon as they reach the age of 6. By the age of 15 they are considered fully trained warriors and then they serve for 10 years before they are allowed to mate. At this time they move out of the barracks and into a home. They also can chose to learn a new trade or to remain as a warrior.
Federation Intelligence Files
Due to the Prime Directive contact with the natives of this world is forbidden. However a Tellerite freighter did beam up a single individual. This was an Andorian boy of about 16 years of age. He had absolutely no knowledge of his species or the existence of the Federation. He had to be sedated due to his extremely violent nature. He spent the entire trip to Andor locked into a small cargo hold. This individual has since joined Starfleet. His name is Tal, Tel-ar which in Andorian means outcast or renegade. Someone with out family or clan.
