Background

Tucker Family Vineyard

Marty was born in a beautiful Oregon wine country by Marty and Jean Tucker. Growing up in a winery and small town was only somewhat idyllic. Early on, he learned hard work as he was expected to help around the winery. And that he would, at a young age, show a propensity for fixing things from the family's transporter to harvesting equipment.

Cal Tech

He graduated from Admiral Jonathan Archer High School in Molalla, Oregon, towards the top of his class. He turned down a chance to attend MIT to attend CalTech in Pasadena, California. He had considered enlisting after college, but a career day on campus changed that. The recruiter convinced him to attend the Academy and be the first in his family to earn a commission. His father and grandfather were in Starfleet, though they served as NCOs, obtaining the rank of Command Master Chief.

Once he graduated from CalTech, he would enroll in Starfleet. Coming from a small town, it took Marty a while to adjust to academy life. But once he did, he cruised through the engineering program. During his off time, he found a couple of hobbies well, one hobby and another a bit questionable. He developed a fondness for cooking, something he learned by having a restaurant at the winery.

He also had a knack for "creative redistribution of goods." If you couldn't find it on campus, Tuck (as his friends would call him) could most likely obtain it. Nothing large, though there was the Risian Snapping Sea Turtle incident at the Academy pool. He's not allowed to talk about it, and it's a sore spot with upper command at the Academy. While it won him some friends, it got him in trouble nonetheless.

Personal Notes

Food & Drink

Single Malt, One of Marty's Favorite beverages

Marty considers himself a decent cook, having learned from several chefs at his parent's vineyard. He has no problems using replicators because they're fast and easy, but he prefers real meals, using real food. That's one of the reasons he loves the USS Ronin; Captain Niac's former host was a chef, and he brought a chef aboard for the crew. It's made a world of difference. Some of his favorite dishes to cook are seared scallops with bacon and apple, a nice rib-eye, medium rare, and he's come to like many dishes from Bajor. He'll try anything once. Tucker also has a holo-deck program of the French Laundry and restaurants from around the galaxy.

His favorite alcoholic beverages include many Earth spirits of the 20th century forward. His regular drink is just a well-aged bourbon on the rocks with a splash of citrus soda. Beer is also a favorite of Marty's, having grown up in Oregon, where the beer culture is off the charts. Usually, he'll go with a nice IPA or a Pale Ale. He has been known to put back a drink or three occasionally; hangovers are not his friend.

As far as non-alcoholic beverages are concerned, you will never see him without his raktajino. He has the replicator in his quarters set to produce a cup upon his work alarm going off. He takes it extra strong, lightly sweet.

He has at least one every morning..

Hobbies

Marty's Runabout the Coos Bay

He likes to tinker and repair things. He's constantly working on his Runabout the Coos Bay. He had a holodeck program that he was rebuilding a nineteen-sixty-four Impala, candy apple red, rag top. Marty is also a voracious reader of anything from sci-fi to technical manuals.

He's also a 20th-century aficionado. From pop culture to music and movies, he loves all of it. At some point, he'd like to try a movie night on the Ronin as a crew-building exercise and to show off his love of the 20th Century.

Games

He loves games, and these are just a few of his favorites. He loves games of chance and is willing to put down some Latinum occasionally. He also enjoys the old earth sport of Hockey, both watching old holos and playing the game on the holodeck.

  • Tongo (Still learning)
  • Tri-Dimensional Chess (Still learning)
  • Dom Jot
  • Darts
  • Poker
  • Dabo

Attire

  • On Duty: Normal duty uniform, sleeves rolled up. Sometimes, he'll be in coveralls, but it's rare.
  • Off Duty: He's a jeans and t-shirt type off duty. Usually, a band t-shirt from one of the many 20th-century bands and other pop culture references. However, he is known to wear his Ronin t-shirt.
  • Formal/Awards/Ceremonies: Mainly his dress whites for fleet-related engagements. He prefers a well-tailored tux if it's a formal affair outside of the fleet.

Personality

  • Quarters: Warm and inviting. Marty is slowly adding decorations as his career moves forward.
  • Office: It's normally well-lit and inviting. His main desk can also sub as a control console for all engineering. Displayed behind him on a shelf are mini-replicas of famous ships warp-cores, including the Defiant, Enterprise-D, and Voyager.
  • Favorite Drink(s): Raktajino and Bourbon on the rocks.
  • Favorite Food: Anything spicy and has recently taken to sampling Bajoran food; he loves Hasparate.
  • Mannerisms: Sarcasm is Tucker's love language. He also tends to ramble and use comedy in tense situations. He's also very focused on work.
  • Likes: People, music, ice hockey, and raktajino sunrises at the family cabin in Whitefish, Montana, The thrum of a warp core on the night shift. Drinking his parent's Wine
  • Dislikes: Bullies, rude people, cold coffee, plasma conduit build-up, and the occasional Romulan.
  • Goals & Ambitions: Marty is early in his Starfleet career, and he wants to keep moving up the chain of command, though at this point, he's not sure he wants the center seat after Montgomery Scott made the rank of Captain and stayed an Engineer.
  • Temperament: Marty is pretty easygoing and sometimes unflappable. But don't let that fool you; Marty is not one to be crossed. He's loyal to a fault. Getting on his bad side includes being bullied and being rude, especially to wait staff.
  • Physical Limitations: Marty is fit and has no physical problems currently.
  • Strengths: He's charming, with an undertone of cocky, and will step up in leadership situations. He loves being in a crowd and talking to people; it's one of the reasons he joined Starfleet. He loves the diverse nature of the organization. As mentioned, he's very loyal.
  • Weaknesses: He can be over-trusting at times and can be a bit cocky as well.

Marty's Rules

  • Rule #1: Never mess with Marty's Raktajino if you want to live
  • Rule #2: Always carry a knife
  • Rule #5: No such thing as coincidence
  • Rule #10: All else fails, reverse the flow
  • Rule #14: Bend the line, don't break it

Music Interests

Tuck has a wide musical taste, from Klingon Fusion Jazz to 21st Country music. Music is Marty's love language; when he can't articulate things, music seems to be the right answer. One of the eras he enjoys and is a virtual historian of the Seattle Music scene in the early 90's. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, you couldn't escape these ands; it was part of growing up there. Between his office and quarters are littered with artifacts from the time period. And there isn't a time he's not listening to music, whether it's in his office or his place of zen (the Jefferies tubes). He even has music stored on his ever-present padd so he can take it with him, especially on away missions. Music helps him focus, he's able to zero in on a task and work on it until it's complete, however long that takes.

He pretty much has a playlist for everything.
