History
Their history is one of war. War between families, clans, tribes, communities and finally back to families. With over 2,000 years of partially recorded history it can be seen that while such groupings as clan, tribe and community each saw temporary rise's to power they always fell to the more primitive but binding grip of the family.
So much so that now there are 93 recognized families left. Any other's outside of these families are considered outcasts, renegades and fair game for anyone who can stick a harpoon into them.
Now every community on the planet is made up of members of a single family. All their effort is geared towards increasing the power of their family. It was only with the shocking revelation that they were not the only species in existence that convinced these families that they needed to work together in order to survive.
Now days while their are still outbreaks of violence between the families they will not allow it to escalate into open warfare. For one it would weaken them and two it is no longer a practical method of gaining power.
Government
They are governed by representatives from each of the 93 most powerful families. This group is called the Presidum. Any other families that survive are allied to one of these or are considered outcasts.
Description
They are a species of fish-like humanoids and have purplish-silver scales. They have a fin on the top of their heads and webbing between their fingers and toes. They have abnormally long fingers and toes that are tiped with sharp claws. Their eye's which are better suited to underwater use are on the sides of their head.
Physiology
They are an amphibious species with dual breathing systems that are interconnected in such a way as to provide excellent breathing capabilities. Their hearing and visual abilities are less than normal for most intelligent humanoid species when out of the water.
They very seldom ever leave their home world due to the trauma to their systems caused by space travel. Their preferred method of dealing with the trauma of space travel is a self-induced catatonic state, during which they can rest standing up. Their half-shut eyes fully open upon awakening, a process that takes several hours. They then proceed to eat large quantities of vermicula.
Psychology
Almost nothing is known about their psychology as they tend to avoid talking about it. No records have ever been revealed that would shed any light on this subject.
Religion
The First Father is the name given to the first of their people. He swam among the stars until he saw the glorious blue waters of their home world. Then he left the stars and gave birth to his people. Huge statues can be found grown from light blue coral in his image in every city and community.
Mythology
Legends claim that one of the statues is in reality a native growth of coral that grew over the First Father's grave when he finally turned the world over to his children.
Society
They are an antagonistic species with few periods of true peace to be found anywhere. Communities will work together but seldom help out even those communities just a few leagues away. Large communities have many dissidents and revolutionaries. In some cases multiple factions will be competing against the local government for control of a city.
Culture
Not much in the form of the arts except for a strange form of music that is painful for almost all other humanoids to listen to.
Customs
So far the Federation has no information on this subject on file.
Technology
They are one of the few aquatic species to have developed successful deep water technologies. In this regard they are in many ways far in advance of other species. However they are far behind the Federation when it comes to many other forms of technology. Their weakest area of knowledge is space technology. This is due to the physical difficulties they suffer when trying to employ flight of any kind.
Economy
They export ultritium which is a high explosive. It can be easily formed for many uses. One such was to line the robes of terrorists that tried to blow up a Federation Membership Conference.
Military
Each of the 93 important families has their own military forces, however due to the physical difficulties that they suffer from none of the families have any air or space force. All the military is ground or water based.
Federation Intelligence Files
On stardate 42859.2, several Antedeans were revealed by Ambassador Lwaxana Troi to be conspiratory assassins bent on sabotaging their planet's Federation membership conference on Pacifica. Investigations proved that the Antedean ambassador was an agent of a small terrorist group. Since then, the Antedean government has gone to great lengths to disavow any authorization of this plot. The Antedeans have gained membership in 2372.
