Akaali

The Akaali was a pre-industrial civilization that the Enterprise NX-01 encountered in 2151, inhabiting a Class M planet. Another race, known as the Malurians, were exploiting their planet without their knowledge. The use of Tetracyanate 622 caused many of the Akaali to suffer from a serious disease.

Riann was a member of this species. (ENT: "Civilization")

History

Pre-industrial society closely resembling 19th Century Earth, encountered by the Enterprise NX-01 in 2151. The Akaali were suffering from a mysterious plague caused by a secret Malurian mining operation.

The city's groundwater was contaminated with tetracyanate 622, a known toxic compound used as an industrial libricant. This was deemed by the ship's doctor, Phlox to be the cause of the wide-spread plague among the civilians. Luckily, Captain Archer uncovered this information, destroyed the operation, and left behind a cure for the Akaali.

Since this time they have evolved and developed into a species that while technologically behind many of the member worlds of the Federation are one of it's firmist supporters.

Description

In appearance they look like humans but with a thin section of raised ridged skin over bone that goes from just above both eyebrows up the forehead into the hair line.

Physiology

While they may appear human they have a radically different set of hormones and chemical makeup. The basic internal layout is different as well but the functions are basically similar.

Psychology

Very similar to most intelligent humanoids, especially humans.

Economy

They produce and export a large number of raw materials.

Military

No true military altho they do have a few obsolete military vessels they have purchased off other species. This strange fleet is used to patrol their section of space. The crew of these vessels are more a police force than anything else but they like to call themselves the planetary defense force.

Government

Description

A humanoid race which is distinguished physically by golden leathery skin with numerous small circular openings about the head, especially on their wide-set nostrils and atop their fluted head ridge similar to Klingons and Bolians. Some Algolians have more muted head ridges, as seen among those on the Bajoran Space Station and Deep Space Nine, on stardates 46423.7 and 46844.3.

Physiology

They have a completely different internal set up as compared with the majority of humanoid species. One aspect of this can be seen in the slow, careful way they do everything. It is an offshoot of their slower metablism and general overall physical makeup.

Some have made the mistake and thought that because they move and respond more slowly than other species that they are less intelligent. This is incorrect. There physical and hormonal makeup has resulted in their bodies responding at a slightly slower speed than those of other races. They have turned this into an advantage.

As a result they always move in a stately, almost regal manner.

Psychology

They tend to have fewer mental problems than most intelligent humanoid species. However on the extremely rare occassion when one of then does go over the edge it is usually in a very big way.

Religion

Mythology

Society

They have an almost utopian society with well modulated health care, social services, education available to all and assistance of all kinds available to all. There communities are well laid out with an eye towards not just function but beauty. Almost every living space has it's own large balcony with plants, flowers and water fountain or water fall.

Culture

They enjoy all forms of art and music. It is not uncommon for any citizen to spend a little time each day enjoying if not practiseing one art form or another. They have adobted many forms from other civilizations and cultures. One that has swept the planet is the art of growing Bonzai trees.

Customs

They have few customs but one that has survived is the Departure. When ever one of them die his family and friends gather and exchange stories and memories. In the old days this was followed by a cremation but now days the body is taken into space and allowed to drift into the closest star.

Technology

They are on a par with many of the more scientifically inclined Federation member worlds. They have a large number of excellent research facilities and have been given credit for a few of the inovations now in use on the Sovereign Class Starship.

Economy

Extremely well developed trade system and they have a branch of the Federation Inter-Galactic Stock Exchange and Trade. In fact it is the 2nd largest facility of its kind within the borders of the Federation.

Military

They have no military and never did. They do have a Federation space station and drydocks in orbit. This facility is used to repair any size ship smaller than a heavy cruiser.
