"You are a biological lifeform. That makes you illogical, flawed, impractical and inferior."
a greeting by an Android created by the Old Ones (Exo III).
The Old Ones (Exo III) were a humanoid species that were destroyed by their own creations. Amazing androids of such complex design that they are even capable of understanding and feeling emotions. They are all that remain of them.

History

Exo III was once a lush planet until the system's star began to dim and temperatures on the planet got lower with each passing year. This was due to the star's energy being drained by the One during his battle with Q. As a result the population was forced to go underground to survive.

Eventually, they developed the technology to construct androids. The best of these machines were remarkably capable: physically strong, mentally agile and capable of functioning without guidance for centuries. They continued to improve their technology until they were capable of giving their machines emotions.

Giving their androids emotions turned out to be a mistake, as the machines became frustrated with the illogical, inferior beings that had created them. The Old Ones grew afraid of their creations, and began to turn them off. Their survival threatened, the androids overcame their programming and destroyed their builders.

Over the next 500,000 years the androids themselves began to wither away, and many put themselves in stasis until needed again, with Ruk tending to them. Something he continued to do for many centuries.

In 2261, the Federation archaeologist, Dr. Roger Korby, and his assistant Dr. Aaron Brown, crash landed on the planet. While Dr. Brown died, Ruk was able to rescue Dr. Korby, although he was badly injured. Eventually Dr. Korby became interested in the androids' capability to build androids and had an android duplicate of himself and Dr. Brown created, as well as a female associate named Andrea.

In 2266, the USS Enterprise arrived at Exo III in an attempt to ascertain the location of Korby's expedition. After creating an android duplicate of Captain James T. Kirk in an attempt to spread the androids across the Federation, Korby's master plan was stopped. Ensuing events led to the destruction of Ruk and all of the androids created by Korby. The ancient records, Korby's notes, and the android duplicator survived.

Another attempt by the Brown android in 2268 led to a similar disaster, and Exo III was abandoned by those androids that were still functioning.

In 2304, Dr. Emil Vaslovik, Noonien Soong, and Ira Graves traveled to Exo III and rediscovered Dr. Korby's home on the planet. During their investigations, they accidentally released several androids left in stasis, and they spend several decades examining the wreckage of Dr. Korby's ship and begin to build their own starships, allowing them to leave Exo III.

Starfleet has since quarantined this world. The main reason for this is that it is unknown if there are any more androids still hidden deep under the planet’s surface regardless of the fact that they may or may not be activated and functioning at this time.

Government

No records have survived or been discovered that might be able to shed some light on how the original biological humanoids governed themselves. Even the means used by the androids is currently still a mystery as no data has yet been discovered that might explain how they function together as a group.

Description

Few records remain but those that do would seem to indicate that the original biological species were typical humanoids with pale skin. Their android creations were made in their image and have more color in their skin and could easily pass for humans, Trill, Risan or any of a dozen other species.

Physiology

Almost no records have survived to give us an idea of the way the original biological species physiology worked, other than the very simplest truth that they were an intelligent humanoid species.

Psychology

Almost no records have survived to give us an idea of the way they thought, interacted with one another or how they developed relationships. What is known is that their android creations seem to be flawed as they consider intelligent humanoid species to be illogical, imperfect, inferior beings.

Religion

These androids have no religion of their own and few records remain to show what kind of religion the original biological species that inhabited this planet may have had.

Mythology

These androids have no myths of their own and few records remain to show what kind of myths the original biological species that inhabited this planet may have had.

Society

These androids have no society of their own and few records remain to show what kind of society the original biological species that inhabited this planet may have had.

Culture

These androids have no culture of their own and few records remain to show what kind of culture the original biological species that inhabited this planet may have had.

Customs

These androids have no customs of their own and few records remain to show what kind of customs the original biological species that inhabited this planet may have had.

Technology

Eventually, they developed the technology to construct androids. The best of these machines were remarkably capable: physically strong, mentally agile, and capable of functioning without guidance for centuries.

The Old Ones continued to improve their machines, eventually giving them the ability to feel emotions. Perhaps their greatest technical achievement was the android duplicator, a mechanism that could manufacture a copy of a living being, including his memories.

Economy

As only androids have been living on Exo III for the last 500,000 years there has been no need for any trade with any other species.

Military

There are no records to confirm the existence of any kind of military troops, force or warships during the time that the original biological species existed on this world.

Since then the androids had no need of them and only with their exposure to individuals from the Federation and Star Fleet have they been exposed to modern weapons and their technology.

The Federation has finally constructed and installed a series of warning devices to warn off all space craft. This is backed up by a number of defensive satellites whose main purpose is to further warn off all ships.

Our Universe

The androids created by the Old Ones, the original biological species to inhabit Exo III were the cause of their own eventual genocidal extinction.

In 2261, first contact was established between Federation archaeologist, Dr. Roger Korby and the androids when his ship crash landed on the planet.

In 2266, the USS Enterprise arrived at Exo III in an attempt to ascertain the location of Korby's expedition. Ensuing events led to the destruction of Ruk and all of the androids created by Korby. The ancient records, Korby's notes, and the android duplicator survived.

Another attempt by the Brown android in 2268 led to a similar disaster, and Exo III was abandoned by those androids that were still functioning.

In 2304, several androids that were in stasis were accidentally activated. They spent several decades examining the wreckage of Dr.

Mirror Universe

In the mirror universe, Exo III was a planet located in the Beta Quadrant which was once home to a humanoid race which became known as the Old Ones. During a visit to the planet in the 2260s, Captain James T. Kirk of the ISS Enterprise destroyed Ruk, the last surviving member of a society of androids which had turned on their masters and killed them hundreds of thousands of years earlier.

In 2371, an archaeologist for hire named Jean-Luc Picard speculated that if it were not for Kirk's actions on Exo III, the Terran Empire may have been conquered by androids rather than the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance.

Both Memory Alpha and Memory Beta were used as references as well as the TV episode, TOS: What Are Little Girls Made Of?

The following written sources were also used, TOS novel: Double, Double, TNG novel: Q-Strike, TNG novel: Immortal Coil and the TNG - Mirror Universe novel: The Worst of Both Worlds. Last of all The Star Trek Compendium was also used.
