After being denied a position in the Vulcan Science Academy despite both his parents having positions with the institution, Sotam sought to apply himself elsewhere. After a period of drifting from place to place, finding each beneath his abilities, he was admitted to StarFleet Academy. After nearly dropping out his first year and being close to academy probation during his second, Sotam steadily improved during the second half of his training.
