Barzan II possesses few, if any, natural resources and is considered inhospitable to most lifeforms - all visitors must wear environmental gear or stay in one of several orbital stations. It is not an M-class planet.

History

First contact with the Barzans occurred before the 2250s, by which time Starfleet had officers native to the species.[1]

In 2366, a wormhole was discovered near Barzan II, of which the Barzans sent within an automated space probe. It was presumed that the wormhole led into the Gamma Quadrant, and the Barzanian Planetary Republic intended to sell the rights to the wormhole to the highest bidder. However, negotiations for the wormhole fell through when it was discovered that it was unstable, and talks ultimately fell apart.

Government

The governing body for the Barzans is called the Barzanian Planetary Republic, located on their homeworld. It is headed by a Premier.[2] They are politically neutral and have an economy based on rare mineral export and development of environmental and life support gear.

Description

The Barzans are humanoid in appearance, with light copper to tan skin, and facial ridges. Their hairline is seated far back from their forehead.

Physiology

Due to the nature of their homeworld, Barzans require small amounts of ammonia, and must wear a small breathing apparatus over the cheek. The breather is worn about the neck and lower head, composed of small disks held at each end of the mouth by a simple open frame extending from the top and bottom of the ear.

Resource-poor and so far dependent on other species for generations, the Barzans are technologically only moderately advanced, and they do not have manned space travel capabilities of their own.
