History

Contact between the Selay and the Federation had existed for many years prior to 2317 when a lone Selay was a patron at the Bonestell Recreation Facility on Starbase Earhart.

The Selay and the other race in their system, the Anticans, entered hostilities as soon as they discovered each other. After several decades of contained war and uncontained hatred, both simultaneously applied for Federation membership in 2366. Federation mediators were able to resolve the conflict and both inhabited worlds are very recent additions to the Federation.

There are numerous rumours regarding the barbaric nature of the extent of the war between these two species. These include the unconfirmed claims that both species would eat the dead of the other.

It is an interesting fluke that two semi-humanoid sentient species evolved concurrently in the same system, with equivalent levels of technology. It has sparked much interest among various scholars.

In 2370, the Erlan, a Selay merchant ship, docked at Deep Space 9.

Government

They have a central government led by members of the nobility.

Description

Reptilian semi-humanoids. Selayans resemble upright bipedal serpents with two arms. Tri-digited and of average height, they apparently have a well-developed sense of smell. Their scaly skin fans up into a cobra-like hood across the back of the head and the official party of ambassadors wears loose, flowing collared gowns.

Physiology

They tend to need warmer temperatures than most other sentients. This is partially due to the fact that they produce almost no body heat themselves. They can function in harsh, hot dry conditions better than most species. It is believed that at some point during their development into a sentient species that their world had less water available and was more desert-like over larger areas.

Psychology

They have a what is best for me, is best for you attitude. They tend to hide their true feelings and are reputed to be vindictive and petty.

Religion

Only members of the nobility pass beyond the final veil at death and enter the legendary afterlife. This is a place of endless beauty, bounty and ease; a place in which there are no cares. It is these honored dead that look after the fates and control the destiny of the living.

Mythology

While their may be many stories that have lasted down through the ages not many of them could really be considered myths. They seem to be merely records of the achievments of one noble or another.

Society

The nobles rule and the people obey. Cities are well kept but 75% of the population live with just enough food and other essentials resources. This is a carefully maintained system that ensures that everyone has enough to survive.

Some Federation scholars believe this is a remnant of a older time when food and water was scarce and in high demand.

Culture

They have large stone scupltures of various nobels everywhere. Also their art is full of pictures of various important individuals and their achievements.

They also have a strangely hypnotic style of music that uses mostly wind instruments that make low harmonic sounds that flutter up and down a short scale of notes to create the tune. Danceing is a very physical event with much twisting, turning and undulations.

Customs

When an important noble dies his body is carefully clothed and sealed into a large stone chamber with a number of servants who will serve him in the afterlife. It is considered an honour to be picked to join a noble in such a death. It is the only way a commoner can reach the afterlife.

Technology

There technology level is way below that of many of the other member worlds in the Federation. Strangely enough they are extremely close to that of the Anticans, the other species that lives in their system.

Economy

They are fairly self-sufficient but since joining the Federation have established a number of trade deals with a number of other species. However they still refuse to trade with the Anticans.

Military

They have a well developed military force with the emphasis on ground and planetary defence troops. Their space craft have limited combat capabilities and are used mostly for conveying the troops to the location in which they will do battle.

Federation Intelligence Files

Their delegation came aboard the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) on Stardate 41249.3. They had a longstanding dispute with the Anticans, another sentient race that lived in the their system and during their trip on the USS Enterprise 1701-D they used concealed weapons to go hunting for their archenemy the Anticans.
