History
Long ago the Valtese and the Kriosians were one people. All part of the vast Kriosian Empire. Then the two royal brothers Krios and Valt both fell madly in love with a female metamorph called Garuth. When Krios kidnapped her and fled, the empire was ripped apart by civil war that lasted for centuries. This war was eventually brought to an end by the Ceremony of Reconciliation. Despite receiving the gift of Kamala from the Kriosians as a mate, Chancellor Alrik was more concerned about the remaining provisions in the treaty, including unacceptable aspects of proposed trade agreements, the review of uncommitted territories, and the schedule for exchange of technology.
Ultimately the negotiations and preceding Ceremony were successful. The wedding, held in a holodeck recreation of the Temple of Akadar, went as planned, as Krios and Valt Minor took their first steps towards peace.
Government
The Valtese have a unique government in that they are ruled by a Chancellor who is selected from among the most powerful upper class families in the world. This system replaced the previous royal dynasty which had ruled the mighty Kriosian Empire. With the kidnapping of Garuth by one the two royal brothers who were heir to the Empire, Krios eventually brought about its downfall. In the ensuing conflict Valt and the rest of the royal family were killed. Each Chancellor is elected to a term lasting 20 years in which they control the government.
Description
This humanoid species, are much shorter than their Kriosian cousins but in the modern era are less sentimental as a culture. The races do share a dark-spotted skin pattern along the hairline and down the neck and spine, not unlike the majority species of Trill hosts. Also the hair line on the males is usually very high on their foreheads.
Physiology
As with many humanoid species, while there are numerous similarities between them and others, there are also numerous ways in which they differ. The Valtese are no exception. The species they are most similar to is their Kriosian cousins. The only big difference is the complete absence of any metamorphs with in the Valtese population. Both species live approximately 250 years on average.
Psychology
They seem to be very reserved with very few displays of public emotion. Other than that they are like most other intelligent humanoid species with complex psyches and their fair share of attendant neurosis and mental illnesses.
Religion
Once every citizen was expected to visit the ancient Temple of Akadar on Krios. That was before the Kriosian Empire fell. Now religion no longer has a strong hold on their people. Now it seems to act as a social conscience and fills the niche usually reserved for psychiatrists and councilors. They officiate at every important event in an individual’s life, from birth to death. From assisting in arranging marriages to performing the marriage rites. They are unusual in one respect; while they serve the same class from which they were born they will mingle freely among themselves regardless of class.
Mythology
They have no true mythology, although they do have a large collection of stories that have to deal with them, their Kriosian cousins and their mutual history. Included in this are a surprising number of stories that have numerous similarities between them especially the best loved tales of the doomed love of the royal brothers Krios and Valt for the metamorph known as Garuth. This is even though Krios kidnapped the lady resulting in the fall of their empire and the civil war that lasted for centuries.
Society
They have a very definite class based society with 3 basic levels. The upper class that generally make up the senior administrative and ruling class. This includes many of the more influential families and those who control the majority of industrial and economic power. The lower class is by far the largest and this includes all the industrial, agrarian and physically demanding occupations. As well as many other insignificant jobs and occupations. The middle class are generally well off, with good jobs as administrative or professional experts with many years of education and training.
Culture
While many forms of artistic expression are practiced and enjoyed by the various classes, the most popular form crosses most class boundaries. This is the almost universal love of what they call “Iggulden”. A kind of musical spectacle performed usually on a stage but in a pinch can be performed almost anywhere. The closest comparison would be a kind of hybrid between Klingon and Terran opera mixed with impressive acrobatic/dance routines.
Customs
The oldest custom that they have in common with their Kriosian cousins is that of arranged marriages. This is probably their oldest tradition that has lasted, with very few changes since the very early beginning of their civilization.
Technology
They are not as advanced as the Federation. Thanks to the numerous trade pacts and co-operative endeavors between them and the other species within the Piria Sector they are able to stay competitive and continue to advance, although it is at a slower rate than the Federation.
Economy
They are fairly self sufficient but do have a number of long term trade treaties with the other species within the Piria Sector. This pact includes a co-operative military venture to protect all civilian traffic with in the sector. They are the largest single economic force with in the sector, however almost half of this is imports and exports from outside the sector.
Military
Since the formalization of the Ceremony of Reconciliation, which ended a centuries long war between them and their Kriosian cousins they have reduced the size of their military. This was a mutual agreement between the 2 governments which resulted in not only a slow gradual decrease in their military forces but also the slow gradual development of a joint military task force to defend them all.
Now they have a very small military force that mainly police’s their system and in conjuncture with the other species within the Piria Sector, the sector as well. This is to ensure the safety of all cargo and transport ships operating with in this area. Other than that they have a standing militia that acts more like a planetary police force. In a pinch they can add almost half the total men and ships that they already supply to the joint security force.
The Piria Sector Joint Security Force (PSJSF) has combined the equivalent of almost 100 ships, with just over half of these being small frigate class vessels. The Valtese only have 3 large cruisers, 2 of which are part of the joint security force.
