Born to a government official, it was always expected that Saya would stay on Vulcan and become a contributing member of Vulcan society.  From an early age, she developed an interest in science, as well as a curiosity of what lay beyond Vulcan.  Originally, she studied to become a Geologist and procured a position at the Vulcan Mining Institute. While this was considered vital and appropriate work, it was, however, tedious and uninteresting to her. Saya toiled for ten years in a job she was not particularly satisfied with, and finally turned her attention to Starfleet Academy. Despite the fact her parents were not pleased with her choice, she enrolled and found herself more at peace with the choice she had made.
