" For clan and honour. Krahan! Krahan! "
a Proxcinian chant.
The Proxcinian are a humanoid species that has a history of nonstop conflict of one kind or another being fought somewhere on their world. In fact these conflicts have become more of a sport being fought for pride, honour and glory more than they are for any actual political or monetary gains.

History

Long ago, when they lived in small groups they started to compete and fight with one another for the best hunting grounds and farming areas. As time passed the groups grew bigger but the infighting continued. This is the origin of the family as an individual political entity with everyone being related with in a group, working together and fighting to protect what they had from other families.

Over time these families became larger and evolved into the current clan system with them controlling entire regions with cities, towns, villages and all of the resources with in those areas under their control. Border conflicts were semi-constant and numerous small wars were fought. This continued for more than 2,500 years until the advance of technology made warfare less of a sport and more of a danger to their continued existence.

A few of the more progressively minded clans realized that continued conflict with their new advanced weaponry could result in massive casualties, atrocities and possible planetary damage. They banded together and came to an agreement that would restrict the type of weapons and equipment that could be used for combat between the clans.

They approached other clans. Some found the idea intriguing and after consideration agreed while others refused. Those clans that refused were destroyed, every single individual including women and children were eliminated. With this as an incentive fewer and fewer clans declined and after lengthy negotiations every single clan on the planet signed the Treaty of Krahan.

This was by no means a quick fix to their problems but after almost 500 years of struggle, strife, constant back stabbing and arguing they had a unified planetary wide agreement which guaranteed that each and every clan would only use those weapons and war machines allowed by the treaty.

Eventually they developed the technology to allow them to explore space. At first it was merely a hobby of the more powerful, wealthier clans. Another way to compete amongst themselves to prove which one of them was the best. However when they discovered the existence of other species it changed everything.

There was much debate between the various clans and numerous radical ideas of how to deal with this new information were proposed. In the end they selected to observe and put more effort into technology that they could use to defend themselves with if the need arose. Eventually they built warships and only then did they continue to explore the universe around them.

Finding a number of planets capable of sustaining life they established colonies, made contact with other species and in the process fought a few small wars, coming out of them slightly better off than they went into them.

In 2336 the Borg attacked and assimilated their largest colony on Tivila V. Over 1.8 million people were lost.

During the Dominion War they lost two more colonies to attack by the Breen and to the Jem'Hadar.

During this border conflicts, raids and actual wars between the various clans were ongoing with the balance of power constantly shifting between the larger clans with most of the smaller clans either being allied or shifting their allegiance back and forth between the various bigger clans.

In 2373 a new Proxcinian War broke out that involved almost all of the larger clans and a vast majority of the smaller ones as well. Most of the surviving colonies also got involved and numerous trade deals were conducted in order to purchase additional weapons and war machines from off world sources as the war started to heat up.

By 2387 this global wide war had finally died out with no real gains by any of the clans involved.

Government

Each clan has its own governing body which can vary radically from clan to clan. Some clans are led by a monarch, a chief, an elected official, a council, a spiritual leader and so forth and so on. As a result each and every clan is essentially its own unique political entity.

For the most part the clans squabble and fight, never working together except when threatened by an outside force like an alien threat. Even then some clans may bow out and leave it to the other clans to deal with it.

This constant infighting between the numerous different political entities means that there is usually a conflict of some kind being fought somewhere on their world at all times. Only the rules and conditions agreed to in the Treaty of Krahan guarantee that civilian targets are left alone and that weapons and machines of war are limited in their destructive capabilities.

Description

They are on average between 5'7" and 6'1" with absolutely no body hair anywhere on their bodies. Their eyes are a uniform yellow with black irises and their skin has a slight leathery texture to it. Also their skin tends to be a light brown with patches of light gray. On their heads they have a number of long, thin projections that stick out about a foot. They have no ears on the side of their heads but do have slits with a protective skin flap over where they do hear. Also on their heads on the upper section on both sides is a spot where the skin is reddish.

Physiology

As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.

Psychology

While not true xenophobes they do tend to not trust most other species and even those they have constant contact with are always watched in case they try to pull a fast one on them. This inability to trust anyone not from their own clan can also affect their ability to work with others of their own species.

Religion

Over time their different beliefs have slowly merged together to form a single planet wide union with a pantheon of gods and goddesses, one for each and every clan. In fact the symbol of each clan is a reflection of their own clan god or goddess.

Mythology

There are numerous tales, myths and legends with most of them involving the various different gods and goddesses that they believe in. However every clan has their own interpretation of each and every myth with their own personal clan god or goddess being portrayed in the best light and all the others coming off as a pale watered down version with less than honest reasons for meddling in the affairs of mortals.

Society

Each clan controls and rules its own lands, cities and resources. As a result each clan area will reflect the beliefs and competency of their various leaders and unique style of government.

Culture

While they enjoy music and most other forms of artistic expression most of them are merely ways of bolstering clan pride and used to portray and preserve the various clan victories earned during the almost never ending border conflicts, raids and ongoing wars.

Customs

At the age of majority each and every single citizen has the symbol of their clan burned into both forearms. This marks them for life as a member of their clan.

The greatest punishment any one of them can suffer is to be banished from their clan. This involves burning their clan brand permanently off of both forearms and then shipping them off world.

Technology

They do not spend a lot on research being more concerned with the problems and issues resulting from inter-clan conflicts. As a result they are not adverse to trading for new technology or buying it from any source regardless of the legalities involved in the deal.

Economy

Each clan has developed their own long and short term trade partners and deals but all of them are always looking for more. As a result they have a fairly low to adequate quality of life depending on the clan they belong to but all of them know that it could be improved.

Military

Each clan has their own troops, war machines, war ships and space ships and their use is governed by the Treaty of Krahan. As a result only certain weapons or war machines are allowed to be used for inter-clan conflicts. All of the rest can only be used in defense of the clan and when needed of them as a species from attacks or threats originating from off world or alien sources.

Because of this all freighters and space ships have defensive and offensive systems that are infinitely more powerful than anything used by their planet bound troops. The cost of building, maintain and outfitting each space ship and freighter as well as the training of its crew must be paid for by the clan to whom the vessel belongs. However only the clan to which the vessel belongs may decide in what way the ship will be used.

Federation Intelligence Files

During his long career as an ambassador, Curzon Dax was successful in preventing an early Proxcinian crisis from descending into open war.

In 2373, Quark, Gaila and Hagath sold seven thousand tritanium plated assault skimmers to a Proxcinian for use in the Proxcinian War. Hagath noted the conflict was "just heating up" and their Proxcinian client would be in contact again to purchase more weaponry.

Sources

Both Memory Alpha and Memory Beta were used as references as well as the TV episode, DS9: Business as Usual.

The DS9 - Mission Gamma novel: This Gray Spirit was also used.
