Professional Timeline
* 238707.12: Graduated Starfleet Academy with a major in Intelligence. Posted to the USS Echo, a Nova-class starship assigned to the Neutral Zone border, as an Intelligence officer.
A sentient species which reproduces asexually by budding. Members of the budding species are bald, have black eyes, no external ear lobes and membranous wings that are used to cover the reproductive area on their backs rather than for flight. Their skin is moist and similar to that of a Terran newt, frog or toad, with microscopic pores that absorb oxygen.
* 238802.04: Promoted to Lieutenant (junior grade) after a successful joint Federation/Romulan mission to infiltrate the capital of Nelvaer to obtain intelligence on the governor's culling of the planet's Reman populace.

As the species has no lungs, speech is achieved by taking in air through narrow slits in the side of the neck. This produces a characteristic sucking noise, as air is drawn over the vocal chords.

Respiration, Hydration and Nutrition
* Spouse: None
This species has no circulatory system or blood - oxygen does not need to be carried around their bodies as the stomatal pores on their skin extract oxygen from the air and (to a lesser extent) from water. Water disperses through their body by diffusion, helping to further oxygenate each life-form. Hydration suits containing mineral nutrients dissolved in water must be worn on the lower half of the body. Pores on this half of the body are designed to extract the minerals from the water slowly. The minerals and water should be replenished once a week.

PNPC Status
While mineral nutrients cater for almost all of the life-form's diet, it is supplemented by ingestion of some insect species. These are digested in a pouch in the throat, which bulges if the life-form has eaten too much. This 'stomach' has a semi-permeable layer, which allows nutrients to filter out and disperse throughout the organism.
Chen is a PNPC of Diego Herrera.

<h2 style="margin:0; background:#000000; font-size:120%; font-weight:bold; border:1px solid #F0E68C; text-align:center; color:#ffffff; padding:0.2em 0.4em;">MEDICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL RECORDS</h2>
Their skin is permanently moist and should not be allowed to dry out. To keep them from wetting a ship's consoles and uniforms, gloves are worn, and the inside of the upper half of the uniform is lined with a waterproof fabric layer.

Medical History
Gender and Reproduction
* 237012.01: Treated for chemical burns from native ice-borer grubs on Andor.
* 238608.09: Taken seriously ill and admitted to Starfleet Medical with a grave case of Andorian shingles. Kept in for observation for three weeks.

Psychological Profile
Members of the budding species are genderless and reproduce through budding. Budding is a form of asexual reproduction where the host effectively produces clones of itself. Budding occurs on a patch on the back between the wings. This should not be covered by a uniform. The cells on that part of the back are effectively stem cells. When the time for budding comes around, the cells respond to hormonal secretions and begin to evolve into larvae, beneath a protective dermal layer. Once they have grown to a sufficient size, they detach from the parent. This part of the process must occur in an enriched breeding pool, as this is the environment in which the larvae will live for the next four to six months. As such, specialised breeding ponds are fitted in the quarters of breeding officers in addition to any existing water/mineral baths to accommodate the young.

Personality
The number of offspring in each litter increases each time the parent reproduces. Lieutenant Vilix'pran on Deep Space 9 was recorded as having produced two, then four offspring, and it was noted by its doctor that it could produce anywhere from eight to eighteen young during its third budding.

* Summary: Due to the nature of his duty post, has cut off all ties with his parents. Intense and strongly motivated, Chen could not be more committed to the causes about which he is passionate. That said, he also has a fun-loving side, even if it takes a while for it to surface. He builds strong bonds of friendship with his colleagues on his placements.
If the parent is malnourished for any reason, or if it is ill, then they will not reproduce. In addition, they are able to detect hormones of members of their own species. In situations where an environment is overcrowded, this will also curb reproduction and the budding cycle will be skipped.
* Mannerisms:
* Temperament: Always loyal to his shipmates.
* Habits: Can sometimes become obsessive about things; he tends to manage this himself as he is aware that this could prove to be a dangerous flaw in the field.

Personal Goals & Motivation
Members of this species have wings, which are membranous and have evolved to act as a cover for the region of their back where budding occurs rather than being able to take their weight in flight. They remain folded to act as a protective barrier to this sensitive region until larvae are ready to detach from the parent organism.
Professional
Simply put, Chen likes to test himself. He is extremely observant, and even as a child he never used to miss a trick. If ever any of his parents had a domestic dispute, he would know even if he didn't witness it, purely by watching they way they interacted with each other. After a while, they would stop trying to cover such things up to spare his feelings, which for a long time created an open bond between all five of them. After a while, however, Chen developed an interest in the Federation at large. He would obsessively watch news reports, taking a particularly keen interest in updates on foreign affairs. For a long time, he dreamed of a career in Starfleet, and as he neared the age for entering the Academy, he became more and more interested in the field of Intelligence. To Chen, information has always been a highly prized commodity, and something more potent than any form of currency.

This led him into trouble on more than one occasion during his studies on Andor. It was not unheard of for him to end up in a fight for eavesdropping on conversations, although from this he learned that being discovered is something that must be avoided at all costs. It is his strongest personal belief that others should always believe that you know less than you actually do.
Common Ailments
Having completed his academy training, Chen is now putting it into practice. With the political climate in the Alpha and Beta quadrants just as unstable as ever, he is finding new ways to put his talents to the test with each passing day.
Members of the budding species are susceptible to a fungal disease, known as chytridiomycosis. This can seriously affect a member of this species as it can riddle the host's cells with fungal spores. In such cases, the antifungal medication, itraconazol, must be administered.

Personal
Psychology
While Chen now has no contact with his parents, he does miss the chance to interact with such a close group. Rather than face the strictures of Andorian society once again, he is always keen to build and maintain friendships. However, this is something that he prefers to do on his own terms, and no-one else's.

Society
Notable Relationships
They have no concept of what male and female means, other than what they may have learned from reading it or studying the sociological principles, or meeting members of other species and talking to them about it. (It still feels very alien to them, though, either way). Members of this species refer to each other (and in many cases to all members of other species) using the pronoun 'it'. Those who have made the effort to understand the concept of gender may use other pronouns, although they may not always choose to use the right ones.

It has now been over two years since Chen contacted his parents on the homeworld. He currently has no intention of re-establishing regular contact in the near future, although he does occasionally arrange for a communiqué to be sent to them to let them know that he is alright. These communiqués are always sent through a third party, on Earth.

Chen does not believe in the Andorian deity, which has led him into conflict with many faithful members of his own species. He prefers to believe that he is the only person who has a say in his destiny.

Personal Timeline
* 238308.31: Leaves Andor in order to join Starfleet Academy.
* 238401.28: Refuses to attend a bonding with pre-arranged bond-mates. This violation of duty brings disgrace on his family, and he is quickly replaced.
* 238703.06: Severs contact with his parents under continuing pressure to return to the homeworld to bond.

Hobbies and Pastimes
* Federation News Network: Chen has retained his passion for foreign affairs, even the ones that he is not included in. As such, he quite regularly listens to the Federation news service, and keeps notes on the current galactic political situation on a large computer screen in his room.

* Memory Games: Unlike some of his classmates from the academy, Chen has not been blessed with an eidetic memory. In order to keep himself sharp, he often plays memory games at his personal computer terminal. As well as keeping his mind active, he also finds them fun.
* Team Activities (Social or Competitive): Always keen to get to know his workmates, Chen enjoys informal social activities and quite often spends his free time in the ship's lounge or mess hall.

Likes and Dislikes
* Likes:-
** Earth Desserts: Particularly ice-cream (but not chocolate, as Andorians can't digest it.)
** Holodeck Calisthenics: Chen enjoys the workout of the combat simulations, and the chance to keep his mind and reflexes sharp.

* Dislikes:-
** Disloyalty, to him or to others.
** Formal gatherings, such as promotion ceremonies.

* Taste in Clothing (when off duty):-
**

Quarters
Always neat, clean and ship shape. The storage space in his room that is not used for clothing is taken up by pristinely arranged PADDs, each containing observations on news reports for the previous ten years. An additional computer screen is affixed to one wall of his quarters, on which he maps the current state of the Alpha and Beta Quadrant's political landscape. Aside from a few trinkets that remind him of home, his quarters are otherwise relatively sparsely decorated.

He has recently added a cabinet in which to display his holonovel trophies; the silver bone that he won for completing his first holoadventure with Greir Reinard
