The Gamma Crucis III Orbital Research Station was a Romulan controlled research facility located near the Neutral Zone and orbiting the small moon of Gamma Crucis III. Starfleet Command received word that the station had been attacked by an unknown entity and quick dispatched the USS Vigilant-A was dispatched, with Rear Admiral Andrus Jaxx as a Senior Diplomatic Attache, to investigate further.

Upon their arrival, a senior team of officers left for the badly damaged station, where they were greeted by the station's commander, Rulak, and a powerful female Romulan Senator named To'Rul. Almost immediately, the Senator accused the Federation of being responsible for the attack as Federation weapon signatures were found in the aftermath of the attack. The Captain and Admiral were suspicious of the Senator's intentions from the beginning, but with the Romulans now allies to the Federation, they were tasked with examining the situation further.

An away team lead by the Fleet Captain Diego Herrera and Rear Admiral Jaxx, containing the majority of the Senior Staff, left for the station to investigate the attack further. Meanwhile Lieutenant Udas was given control of the ship. While the Captain's team toured the facility, surveying the damage and attempting to keep the fragile alliance with the Romulans intact, those officers left on the Vigilant-A began trying to figure out who was responsible for the attack. They were able to confirm the troubling news that Federation weapon signatures were indeed present. The Captain returned to the ship and ordered Udas and a number of other officers to begin discussions with the Romulans on what had happened.

On the station, the science team began working with a Romulan research named Narenna. However, they were immediately suspicious of what exactly the Romulans were studying at the station. While running a system diagnostic, Lieutenant Dueld taJoot uncovered that the Romulans were actually developing a phased cloaking device, something entirely illegal and very dangerous. Such a device would allow cloaked vessels to remain cloaked while they fired.

Shocked by the findings, any further argument was interrupted when the station fell under attacked by cloaked Andorian separatists warships. It turned out that these Andorians had been the original attackers who had left the Federation weapon signatures. They also had been working, in secret, with the Romulans to develop the phasing cloak. Those still remaining on the station beamed back to the Vigilant-A and prepared to defend the station from the attackers. During the pitched battled that followed, unfortunately both the station and two of the Andorian warships were lost. Senator To'Rul was also killed during the station's destruction.

Following the destruction of the station, the Vigilant returned to Deep Space Six and was decommissioned.

It was unknown what happened to many of the Romulan researchers, including Narenna. Commander Rulak escaped and was taken prisoner by the Vigilant crew. As for the phasing cloak, it's technology turned up in the hands of a Romulan terrorist group known as the Ralaaram Ocala some months later.
