Welcome to 118Wiki, a collaborative database for the UFOP: StarBase 118 Star Trek RPG. The purpose of this Wiki is to give members of our community a place to collaboratively build a history of our characters, ships, and plots.

This page our Wiki will introduce you to editing. Because everyone is free to edit any page on the wiki, learning how to edit pages -- and the etiquette of editing -- is important to participating. Let's get started!

User Page

Make sure you're logged in to the wiki using the username and password that was sent to you after training. If you look at the top of the page you're on right now, you'll see a small list of links, the leftmost link being your username.

Your user page is about you, the writer. This is different than the pages you will create for your characters. There's only one writer (you!), but you can have many characters -- that's why you only have one user page.

Here would follow an introduction what to put in a user page, what better not, how to handle the talk. It could be taken mostly from the resources of the Q&A of the old new user page. Maybe a hint that new users could also skip this part would be a good idea idea, too (cause you can play without a user page but not without a character page).

Character Page

Using the wiki, you can create a very rich and detailed character page with information about your character, an archive of sims, and much more. This tutorial will show you the basics for creating a basic character page.

Creating the Character Page

Before you can create a character page, it's helpful to understand how to create a page, and how to name it properly. Please read the content of the link below:

Now let's come to the question how to use your character page. Now, our goal in naming a page is first to make it unique. But we also need to make it easy to find the page. Sure, search would probably pull up a page as long as you know e.g. a character's first or family name. But let's be honest: We don't want to look through all the Williams, all the Smiths and whatever names else. Therefore we're highly recommending to use one way of naming your character pages. It increases the simplicity and efficiency of finding your character pages by far. We need to be careful, however, not to be too specific. For example your rank will change at the next promotion, so we don't want to include it as part of the name because we want conformity with others. So, what about the character's name. While there are some peoples, lile the Ferengi, who seem not to use surnames, most people have a family name and one or more given names. Middle names, if they are not used all the time, can be dropped. Putting the last name first is usually the best, because we're using ranks normally in SIM, most people are known as something like "Ensign Smith". Last names are slightly more common in SIM than first names, so people will likely look for the last name first. In the rare case that your character is more commonly known by their "first" name, then you might want to change this a little. For example a bartender who is always adressed might be an exception of the rule. Playing a Bajoran, a Chinese or a character from another culture that puts family names first you may do so on his/her character page.

Further information about how to name pages in general can be found here: Naming pages properly

Character pages

Now that you have read about how to create and name pages correctly you can proceed with creating your own character page.

Before you begin, keep in mind that you are free to add and edit as much as you wish. The following examples of character pages are just "starting points" to work from.

Click on each of the links below to view our standard, template character pages. Read the instructions on the page for more information about how to choose the template you'd like to use. You can always add elements from other templates once you've started.

How to add Categories

Once you have selected the type of character page you will use you will need to add the following information to the bottom of the page. Read the next section carefully to make sure you do not miss anything.

All pages on the wiki should be categorized. The category tag(s) should be the last text on the page, one to a line.

The first category tag you should add is as follows: [[Category:Characters]]

Examples

Our Featured Bio Team reviews the best bios on the wiki and curates a list of the top examples. You can find lots of inspiration for your own bio by checking out their List of Featured Bios.

Help

In most cases if after reading this you still require assistance you can usually ask either your Captain or 1st Officer. They should be able to either help you out or direct you to someone who can assist you.

Your ship's handbooks

Many ships of the Starbase 118 fleet have come up with different kinds of handbooks. All of those enlisted below are meant as guides for new players aboard.

THE SDC IS CURRENTLY DISCUSSING THE FIRST CONTACT TEMPLATE. I will inform you of the results of that discussion by July 15th.

You can use this template to create a First Contact report from your character's point of view:
  1. Create a new page titled "Species Name/First Contact"
  2. Insert {{subst:First Contact}} into the body of the new page and click save.
  3. Click edit and fill out the details as you wish.

<Dial_> if you had to name a third gender.. something new, original, how would you name <Dial_> it what pronoun would you introduce for it? <Alana_Larson> Hmm... <Dial_> hmm, maybe the idea is generally wrong <Dial_> I shouldn't use male and female <Dial_> for the other two <Alana_Larson> That is an interesting question <Dial_> yeah, I came up with a concept for the species of my char <Dial_> Dial won't stay Bolian <Dial_> this species has three genders <Dial_> if Gender A and Gender B sleep together, they produce Gender C <Dial_> if Gender B and C sleep together, they produce A <Dial_> and if A and C sleep together, they create B <Alana_Larson> Out of curiosity how will Dial change species? <Dial_> I'll simply change it in her bio <Alana_Larson> I suppose <Skyfire> hi, I'm back <Alana_Larson> Welcome back <Dial_> I played her not very Bolian before <Nugra> @Dial, I'd make sure to run it by your captain first. :D <Dial_> the way I played my Bolian char, will fit the new species <Dial_> I did so long ago <Dial_> in fact, he proposed it <Nugra> *nods* <Dial_> my concept of Bolians was claiming them to be Amphibians who moult their skin from time to time <Dial_> they could bloat their neck like frogs <Dial_> and many, many other odd ideas made others propose that I should create a species of my own <Dial_> instead of claiming those to be Bolian habits that were not seen in the show <Dial_> so, in fact I won't change Dial's species but rather simply change the species' name :D <Alana_Larson> http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/xe Pronoun for you <Dial_> sounds like a good idea <Dial_> it could work as a translation of the bolian word <Alana_Larson> And it's not to different from existing pronouns <Dial_> exactly <Dial_> that's why it is perfect <Dial_> so SF when they made contact with my "Bolianlike Speices that doesn't have a name yet" they named the three genders male, female and "something else I have to find a name for, too".. and the pronouns became he, she, xe <Dial_> sounds good <Alana_Larson> xemale? <Dial_> hmm, that is a good idea <Dial_> or maybe I'll find catchy terms for male and female, too... cause after all this gender system is absolutely not like male&female <Alana_Larson> True enough <Dial_> male and female, the words themselves, somehow imply two genders <Dial_> but I don't want to become as weird and confusing as the Andorians became when their gender systems was expanded in the novels <Dial_> they have 2 male nad 2 female genders <Dial_> with weird Andorian names <Alana_Larson> Yeah Andorian genders are confusing <Dial_> I want it to be simple, easy and yet original <Liam_Frost> nah, the andorian system is pretty simple <Dial_> yeah, it is indeed <Dial_> but their names aren't <Liam_Frost> true <Dial_> hemale, shemale, xemale <Dial_> it would imply that these are three different genders <Dial_> stressing that xemale is not something between male and female <Alana_Larson> yep <Dial_> gosh, inventing a species is hard <Dial_> especially when it even doesn't have a name yet <Alana_Larson> Any ideas for a name yet? <Dial_> no <Dial_> I'm using a alien species generator at the moment <Alana_Larson> Try using words from this page <Alana_Larson> Scroll down a bit <Liam_Frost> Zakarian <Liam_Frost> unless that's already taken <Dial_> [04:39:08] Instabula: I'll paste in here what I find useful [04:39:09] Instabula: Subeites [04:39:21] Instabula: Fumons [04:39:30] Instabula: Areiri [04:39:51] Instabula: Setanites <Dial_> I pasted it in the wrong chat window <Dial_> from what page? <Dial_> will you give me a link? <Alana_Larson> Oh forgot the link <Alana_Larson> http://www.lipsum.com/ <Alana_Larson> its the random text that microsoft word can generate to help with formatting <Dial_> sure, it's the right link? <Alana_Larson> yeah I'll copy some of the text for you <Alana_Larson> Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat. Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit ani <Dial_> ok, that's latin <Dial_> how does that help me find a name for my speices? <Skyfire> wait, what? <Alana_Larson> I've always been told it is simple dummy text <Dial_> it is a simply dummy text <Dial_> consisting of latin words <Alana_Larson> Ahh <Dial_> I can't tell if the text makes sense or not <Dial_> haven't read latin for 3 years now <Alana_Larson> I found translations of it <Dial_> yep. it's taken from cicero <Dial_> I guess, it was used as a dummy text because it contains almost all the characters of latin alphabet <Alana_Larson> probably <Alana_Larson> It makes pre-formatting stuff easier <Dial_> how so? <Dial_> Sophilians sounds nice <Dial_> somehow like a sophisticated species :D <Alana_Larson> We use it for setting up the layout off text boxes and what not as way of seeing more or less what it will look like before we get the actual content <Alana_Larson> It does sound nice <Dial_> ah, I see <Dial_> It's so hard choosing a name that ppl will ever call my char <Alana_Larson> I bet <Dial_> whenever they not use the name, they'll go like.. The Sophilian nurse does this and that <Liam_Frost> grr <Dial_> its like choosing a baby name <Liam_Frost> stupid firefox <Dial_> what did the fox do to you? <Liam_Frost> it's locked up on me <Dial_> how so? <Liam_Frost> I tried to check memory alpha for something and it's freaking out <Liam_Frost> not responding <Dial_> ah, that happens from time to time <Liam_Frost> sometimes <Liam_Frost> but usually only for a few seconds <Dial_> lol, they just proposed the species name "booblane" <Liam_Frost> it's ben several minutes now <Dial_> somehow this is getting weird <Liam_Frost> and my post is in one of those windows <Dial_> oh no <Dial_> why don't you type in a text editor? <Dial_> Paelians <Dial_> Borrans <Liam_Frost> force of habit <Liam_Frost> brb <Liam_Frost> gonna try something <Dial_> ok <Dial_> good luck <Liam_Frost> success! <Dial_> let's see. Subeites, Fumons, Areiri, Setanites, Paelians, Borrans or maybe Phaelians <Dial_> cool <Dial_> congratz <Dial_> hmm, I like Phaelians. but it would certainly pronounced like Fail-ians <Dial_> and somehow that's something I don't want <Alana_Larson> I like the Areiri <Dial_> me too <Dial_> I like all of these above <Dial_> except for Subeites <Dial_> that's no choice anymore <Dial_> adn Fumons is stupid, too <Dial_> but since I want to find the "Federation name" I want it not to sound too alien <Liam_Frost> Frellian <Liam_Frost> Garellites <Dial_> maybe, Paelians is good after all <Dial_> it sounds like something Humans could come up with <Alana_Larson> It almost (to me anyway) makes it sound like they have a lot of history with that name <Liam_Frost> brb <Liam_Frost> need a shower <Dial_> it sounds like an ancient name <Dial_> good luck <Dial_> I won't be around when you return <Dial_> so, good night <Dial_> so, the Paelians call themselves chupa (plural chupal) <Dial_> their homeworlds were named Nera, Naias and Nemea by the Federation <Alana_Larson> They evolved on multiple worlds? <Dial_> no, they colonized two class-m worlds <Alana_Larson> Okay <Dial_> even before developing warp-drive <Alana_Larson> Same star system then? <Dial_> no, but they had large ships with biospheres of their own <Dial_> and they had good luck <Alana_Larson> Okay thats a cool idea <Dial_> finding nearby two class-m woorlds <Dial_> yep <Dial_> and they made contact with another species at some point.. but Federation refused to make contact with them, cause they didn't have worp drive <Dial_> but many SF ppl found that stupid <Dial_> but SF command made them wait until the Paelians had convinced this species they had contact with to trade in their warp-technology <Alana_Larson> I thought warp drive was not necessarily the only condition, but if they were aware that they were not alone in the stars they could contact them as well <Alana_Larson> But maybe I'm just rusty with my trek knowledge <Dial_> hmm, I didn't know there was an exception of the rule <Dial_> might be, might not be <Dial_> it would be reasonable to have this exceptio <Alana_Larson> I seem to remember something about that but I don't know if it was canon or not <Dial_> even if it was in a book or on a website, it's ok <Alana_Larson> Hmmm... an excuse to read my star trek books again (like I needed one lol) <Dial_> hehe :D <Dial_> I'm readin worlds of ds9 atm <Alana_Larson> I'm reading Gary Linderer's books about his experiences in the Vietnam war <Alana_Larson> Unfortunatley it doesnt help answer the question about the prime directive <Alana_Larson> http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Prime_Directive#Exceptions <Dial_> Pre-warp civilization was a term used by the Federation to define any society that had not yet discovered and utilized faster-than-light space travel like the warp drive. Pre-warp cultures could range in technology level from extremely primitive to that of Earth in the mid-21st century. (Star Trek Into Darkness; Star Trek: First Contact) The Prime Directive of the Federation interdicted any disturbance of such civilizations, including any form of contact, until a culture had independently proven its warp-capability. Otherwise, any involvement in the development of pre-warp societies could result in the contamination of their culture, thereby altering their natural evolution. Usually pre-warp civilizations were limited to their homeworld. However, their technical abilities could be sophisticated enough to expand throughout their star system. (ENT: "Dear Doctor"; Star Trek: Insurrection) The Federation did allow limited covert research to be conducted on pre-warp civilizations, usually by means of a duck blind. (TNG: "Who Watches The Watchers") Observers could also be placed amongst a civilization as a prelude to first contact. (TNG: "First Contact") <Dial_> oops, should have put in the link <Dial_> http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Pre-warp_civilization <Liam_Frost> and we're back <Alana_Larson> Welcome back <Dial_> wb <Dial_> didn't expcect ot be around when you're bac <Dial_> well, s0me of hte expections are useful <Dial_> like this: The society hails or attacks a Federation vessel <Dial_> The society is in diplomatic discussions with the Federation ( <Dial_> YEAH <Alana_Larson> or federation citizens interfered with the culture as the prime directive does not apply to them <Dial_> there is THE ONE exception <Dial_> The society was previously interfered with by non-Federation citizens (e.g., Klingons) in a manner that would have violated the Prime Directive had it been done by Starfleet personnel <Dial_> thanks for handing over the link <Alana_Larson> Glad to help
