A race of humanoids. Like the Rigellians, the Bandi were obviously a people transplanted from their homeworld onto a terraformed world. Genetic evidence suggests that the Bandi could be a Terran offshoot. They recently lost their prize posession, Farpoint Station, and suffered the destruction of their capital city. Since then the Bandi have resorted to their old ways of nomadic wandering in clans in search of food and resorces. The Bandi are known for their stringy, white and grey hair. They applied for entry into the Federation on stardate 41153.7. However, the Bandi were refused Federation membership due to the discovery that the they had trapped and enslaved another life-form in order to gain entry into the Federation.
THIS DATA FROM MEMORY ALPHA The Bandi were a humanoid race who inhabited the planet Deneb IV. Their technology was not particularly advanced, and their architecture was surprisingly simple.
During the mid-24th century, a group of Bandi captured an injured spaceborne entity and brought it to the surface of Deneb IV. The Bandi nourished the lifeform back to health, but kept it only strong enough to use its unique ability to change energy into matter. Too weak to leave the surface, the creature was imprisoned on the planet and forced to manifest itself as Farpoint Station.
In the year 2364, the lifeform's mate came to Deneb IV to free it, attacking the nearby "Old Bandi City". This attack led the crew of the USS Enterprise-D to realize the nature of Farpoint Station and give aid to the injured creature, allowing it to rejoin its mate in orbit of Deneb. (TNG: "Encounter at Farpoint")
THIS DATA FROM MEMORY BETA The Bandi are a humanoid race native to the planet Deneb IV, located in the Deneb system. For centuries the Bandi lived a nomadic lifestyle on the planet, living in a ramshackle city, and then moving onto another when conditions in that city had deteriorated badly.
In 2362, the Bandi came into contact with the Federation. Impressed with the Federation's abilities, the Bandi promised to construct a starbase that would suit the Federation's needs. However, instead of constructing the starbase, the Bandi captured an injured star-jelly and gave it small amounts of geothermal energy to keep it alive, and force it to assume the shape of Farpoint Station.
However, the Bandi's plan came crashing down in 2364, when Deneb IV was visited by the USS Enterprise-D and the star-jelly's mate. The mate repeatedly attacked the Bandi cities in revenge for the capturing of its mate. Fortunately, the Enterprise crew were able to ascertain the truth and provided enough energy for the captured star-jelly to revert to its normal shape and once again be with its mate.
Following this incident, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the Bandi negotiated for a new starbase that would be built, but with Federation assistance. (TNGnovelization: Encounter at Farpoint)
By 2379 there were Bandi serving in Starfleet, for example aboard the USS Enterprise-E, participating in the relief efforts on Delta Sigma IV. (TNGnovels: A Time to Love, A Time to Hate)
