The singularity aliens use gravity wells as a nest for its young. Some mistook a Romulan warp core's artificial quantum singularity as a nest, sent the Warbird into distress, and then fractured time when the responding Galaxy-class Enterprise's power transfer beam locked on. They are able to assume other forms.
