Lanta left Trill and journeyed to Starfleet headquarters to enlist as a pilot. He was rejected out of hand and left Earth travelling around he signed on for various ships learning the skills needed to be a pilot. He was recruited by Brunsig and volunteered not realising it was a Maquis ship.
