The Starfleet Corps of Engineers (SCE), also known as Starfleet Engineering or Starfleet Engineering Corps, is a Starfleet division that deals with specialized engineering problems. The Corps' mission is to provide engineering services to Starfleet, including:
- Planning, designing, building and operating civil engineering projects
- Designing and managing the construction of military facilities for Starfleet
- Providing design and construction management support for other defense and Federation agencies
Leadership
The Chief of Engineers has separate and distinct command and staff responsibilities. As a staff officer at Starfleet Command, the Chief advises Starfleet on engineering matters and serves as Starfleet's topographer and the proponent for real estate and other related engineering programs. As commander of the Starfleet Corps of Engineers, the Chief of Engineers leads a major Starfleet command that is the Federation's largest public engineering, design and construction management agency. This office defines policy and guidance and plans direction for the organizations within the Corps. The current Chief of Engineers is Rear Admiral Hovin Goruth.
The Starfleet Corps of Engineers Headquarters is made up of an Executive Office and 17 Staff Principals. The Headquarters, located in San Francisco, Earth, creates policy and plans future direction of all the other Corps organizations.
Organization
Due to the extensive spatial volume of the United Federation of Planets, the most efficient organizational structure of the Corps is to have different Divisions which would maintain and service specific areas of Federation space.
The Corps is organized geographically into numerous divisions and subordinate districts throughout Federation space. The districts oversee project offices throughout the world. Divisions and districts are usually defined by Sector boundaries for civil works projects and military projects.
Starbase 118, as the main Starfleet facility in its sector, houses the Starbase 118 Division of the Corps of Engineers.
Research
The Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) is the Starfleet Corps of Engineers research and development command. ERDC consists of several unique laboratories.
Research support includes:
- Mapping and topography terrain analysis
- Infrastructure design, construction, operations and maintenance
- Structural engineering
- Cold regions and ice engineering
- Coastal and hydraulic engineering
- Environmental quality
- Geotechnical engineering
- High performance computing and information technology
- Spaceframe, Zero-G and Micro-G structural engineering
Support services
There are several other major organizations within the Corps of Engineers:
