The Kaelon are a species of near-xenophobic humanoids whose sun has been slowly dying for generations. They are also known for something they call the Resolution, a form of voluntary ritual suicide performed at age 60.

History

Very little is known about their history due to their near-xenophobic heritage. They do not welcome or encourage any contact with other species. In fact they go to great lengths to warn all other species away. Even using their small naval force to encourage this when needed.

However in 2367, the Kaelons were forced to turn to the Federation for help since their sun was dying and time was running out. Starfleet was able to assist in an experiment developed by the Kaelon scientist Doctor Timicin designed to revitalize the Kaelon sun.

As a result of this contact Federation scientists were able to discover that literally generations of the Kaelon people had failed to discover a way to ignite their dying sun on their own. They knew that without some kind of artificial enhancement, their stun would go nova in around 200 years.

Since the collaboration between their government and the Federation no further effort has been made to initiate any long term or short term negotiations in regards to opening the lines of communication between their people and those within the Federation. The Kaelons are not interested at this time.

Government

Even with the contact established between the Federation and their government in regards to their request for scientific help to stop their sun from dying little is known about their government. A few junior representatives who were sent by the government to observe and provide any needed supplies or goods were all that the scientists and observers to their world had contact with.

Description

Kaelonians appear to be much like most humanoid species as they have a wide range of body types, heights, weights, hair and eye color. They have what is considered to be Caucasian skin color and are distinguished from most other humanoids species by their crimson forehead stripes.

Physiology

As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.

Psychology

As a species they do have a few cases of mental illness among their population which they do seem to take time to treat and care for. However there is no data to support any conclusion as to the possibility that like so many other species their elderly suffer a greater number of such mental health issues as the maximum age for any and all of their citizens is 60.

ESP

Kaelons, like Ferengi are immune to Betazoid telepathy. Other than that there has been no evidence to support the possibility that they as a species or a limited number among them may have some form of mental abilities as well. However most experts seem to believe their immunity probably extends to other species as well.

Religion

They are isolationist and little is known about this aspect of their society. However some experts believe that based on the limited amount of data available to them in regards to the voluntary ritual suicides practiced by their species by those who reach the age of 60 that this may be some aspect of their religious beliefs. Further study is required.

Society

From what little data has been made available to the Federation by those individuals who were allowed contact while working to revitalize their dying sun their communities are well laid out with ample infrastructure, amenities, educational and recreation facilities.

The people while reserved and wary of outsiders seemed to be happy, well adjusted, articulate and healthy. Those facilities that were made available to the Federation scientists and observers were clean, well-constructed and efficient.

Customs

Resolution

Kaelon society is marked by the ceremony of the Resolution, where all who reach the age of 60 commit ritual suicide so that they do not become a burden to others. There are no exceptions under any circumstance and Kaelon has lost many of its best minds to this ritual. This leaves the irony that the most sacred ritual in their society may eventually be the death of it. When a person's Resolution comes they are joined by their family and friends in a joyous celebration and their loved ones are left with a wealth of positive memories about the departed.

The practice is seen as cruel and barbaric to many outsiders, but to the Kaelonians it is a celebration of life. The practice is strictly enforced through social taboo, and any Kaelons who dared refuse Resolution risked ostracism, not only for themselves but all their family members as well.

Technology

Kaelon technology is somewhat primitive with only limited interstellar ability although they did understand and have antiquated warp technology. Kaelon fusion technology however is without equal, since they have spent over 200 years researching a way to rejuvenate their sun.

Economy

Due to their isolationist ways they have very little contact with other species. As a result they are completely self-sufficient and do not and have not shown any interest in establishing any off world trade with any other species.

Military

Kaelon warship

This type of warship was used by the Kaelons during the 24th century. These starships were capable of landing on planetary surfaces.

In 2367, following a request of political asylum to the crew of the USS Enterprise-D from the Kaelon scientist Timicin, two Kaelon warships approached the Enterprise from the surface of Kaelon II, taking a standard attack posture with staggered approach vectors. Their orders were to open fire on the Enterprise if it attempted to leave orbit. The three ships remained in a stalemate until Dr. Timicin's request for asylum was withdrawn.

Kaelon II Science Ministry

The Kaelon II Science Ministry was an governmental research institute on Kaelon II.

Doctor Timicin worked for the Science Ministry trying to find a way to revitalize the Kaelon sun.

The Ministry was headed by Minister B'Tardat in late 2367. When Doctor Timicin refused to beam down to the planet and undergo his Resolution, the Science Ministry refused any further contact with the outcast and B'Tardat ordered two Kaelon warships to approach the USS Enterprise-D.

Kaelon sun

The Kaelon sun was the primary of its system. Kaelon II, the homeworld of the Kaelon, orbited this sun. Praxillus, the primary of the Praxillus system, was similar to this star.

The Kaelon sun was dying, leading generations of Kaelon scientists to research various methods of stabilizing stellar energy reactions. The sun was transforming from a yellow dwarf to a red giant.

Dr. Timicin

Scientist from Kaelon II who formulated a helium fusion enhancement system. When the system's trial failed, Timicin was tempted to cancel his upcoming Resolution, or ritual death, and continue working. He was also briefly planning to marry Lwaxana Troi. However, he reversed his decision to avoid the social stigma that would have fallen on his family.
