M’met: “Our sect found the shuttle 5 minutes after witnessing its drop from the sky. We are a kind race. Our value to the galaxy is our medical knowledge. We rushed to the point of impact, knowing there must be wounded. There was a woman still alive. She was carrying a child within her. The child was five days in her womb. She would have wanted the child to live; to find its father some day. So we harvested the fetus to nurture it. The woman died. She was badly injured. *sigh*  So badly wounded. We left the people where they lay. Their race would want to reclaim their loved ones. Why did we take the child? Not tell of its existence? We were selfish, I think. We wished to see what this human child would become under our tutelage. We give her over to you now. In your standard years, she is 15. She can read and write your language and she knows a great deal of our medicines. She holds an interest in such things. You may care for her. But send her back when her life is to cease. We will join her again with her mother. You must promise this to us.” M’met stepped back from Admiral Parker offering him a small bow of respect.

History

Susan grew up on the USS Avenger, a constellation class starship. As soon as she could, she started hanging out at the different departments. Medical was too bloody and counseling wanted to know details about herself. Science was too much like medical... but still, very interesting. Planets and nebulas and black holes... so she minored in it's principles. She hung out at the back of the bridge very quietly with her father’s permission but that was way too tense.

Finally, she found the engineering department. It was calm, controlled. She could smile there. Kenny and Ryan helped her learn what the warp core was. What it did. She didn’t laugh out loud but she didn’t play with abandon.

Ryan would leave for a week every once in a while. Susan was told of the 30 hours of continuing education required yearly. With a smile, Susan stood straight and said she was ready. She would become an engineer.

“I don’t need to be clean all the time. And when I fix things, everyone loves it!” she proclaimed.

Her father approved immediately. Her mother approved the following day.

Susan sat at Ryan’s knee, asking questions and learning about warp cores and relays and antimatter and the ship’s entire system which would eventually be under her command.

After the academy, the Starfleet Department of Occupational Services and Deployment assigned her to the USS Ursa Major as the chief operating officer. Disappointed but compliant, Susan agreed without hesitation. It would get her out there among the stars where her heart was.

During her time on the Ursa, Susan became engaged to Lt.Cmdr. Stephen Carmody who disappeared without saying anything to her. She's still puzzled by his leaving. And becoming more angry with him by the day.

Two years later, the Ursa was decommissioned and she spent two weeks on SB118. Finally, her new orders came through. She was being assigned to the USS Indria-A as their assistant chief engineering officer working on her own. At last she was back in engineering where she wanted to be in the first place. A month later, she got the promotion to chief. Her hard work had paid off.

She received a message from her father, who she regularly kept in contact with that the Avenger was being sent to the scrap yard at Hargoth Shipyards. He and her mother would be taking over the USS Manetheren, an old but worthy ship.

After long conversations with her mother, Susan returned to San Francisco, Earth, to attend Starfleet Medical Academy. She graduated three and one half years later with the rank of Lieutenant and was assigned to the Constitution-B.
