In 2154, the badly-damaged NX-class Starfleet vessel Enterprise encountered a damaged Illyrian starship in the Delphic Expanse. The Illyrian starship was damaged by the spatial distortions of the Expanse while studying a red giant. The distortions caused damage to the ship's engines and life support.
The Illyrians were first encountered in 2154 when an early Starfleet vessel required repairs following the battle of Azati Prime; an Illyrian starship, disabled by an anomaly field, assisted. However the Starfleet crew required a warp coil, which the Illyrians were not willing to trade as without it, their journey home would take three years. The Starfleet crew and several MACOs boarded the Illyrian craft and took the coil by force. The Illyrian craft was left stranded.

Captain Jonathan Archer asked the Illyrian ship's captain for his warp coil in exchange for food and supplies. The captain refused, as the loss of their warp coil would leave them with a three year journey to their homeworld – a journey for which his ship was not equipped. As Enterprise required the warp coil in order to continue their mission to find and destroy the Xindi weapon before it destroyed Earth, Archer was forced to take an away team aboard the Illyrian starship and steal the coil.
Due to the ban on genetic augmentations in the United Federation of Planets in the 23rd century, they were considered outcasts in the Federation. Illyrians could not join the Federation or Starfleet, and there was a directive against mixing Human and Illyrian blood. The Federation also banned the use of any Illyrian medical technology.

Aboard the Illyrian ship, the Enterprise crewmembers encountered a force field surrounding the warp coil. It was only after [[ma:T'Pol|T’Pol]] had Enterprise's phase cannons disable the ship's power junction that was supplying power to the force field, that the force field was eliminated, allowing Captain [[ma:Archer, Jonathan|Johnathan Archer]] and the MACOs to board the Illyrian craft and steal their warp coil.

Before leaving the Illyrian ship, Archer had Enterprise transport food, supplies, and three containers of trellium to the Illyrians' cargo hold to assist them in their three-year journey back to their homeworld.

As a result of this incident it was a long time before any contact of any kind was established between them and the Federation. However contact was finally established and after almost 60 years trade was established with them.

===Illyrian starship===
The Illyrian starship was a class of starship utilized by the Illyrians during the mid-22nd century. This class of vessel was equipped with a minimal armament of particle weapons and was tactically inferior to an NX-class starship. This class was also notable for having its primary warp coil, which was tied into the ship's injector system, protected by a force field.
==Economy==
In the last 50 to 100 years trade with species that are members of the Federation slowly increased. So much so that it eventually had a positive effect on the overall attitude of the Illyrian people to the Federation as a whole.
As expected this resulted in an increase in trade and the formation of more long and short term trade deals. The end result was an improvement in the overall quality of life for many of their people.

==Military==
==Military==
As a result of the negative contact with the Enterprise they greatly expanded and improved on their military fleet. However over time as the Federation expanded and grew in size, they slowly reduced that fleet. The obvious evidence that the Federation was not militaristic or expansionistic with no plans to conquer them were key factors in this decision.
Most experts believe that an even greater reason was the fact that their homeworld was now deep within that area of space claimed and controlled by the Federation. Making it strategically difficult if not improbable that they would ever have to worry about invasion or attack by hostile forces.

In 2259, Starfleet Commander Una Chin-Riley, a decorated First Officer discovered to be an Illyrian, was arrested upon the revelation of her illegal genetic status[4]. She was initially offered a deal by Starfleet where she would be freely released in exchange for a dishonourable discharge. Chin-Riley refused this deal. In retaliation, Starfleet added two additional charges of sedition, threatening twenty years in a Federation penal colony. The subsequent trial resulted in the telling of the history of discrimination and persecution Chin-Riley had faced, and she ultimately admitted she had turned herself in, tired of living a lie. Although the Federation wasn't willing to change their laws regarding genetic engineering for the time being, Chin-Riley was acquitted and officially granted asylum and allowed to return to duty[5]
