History
Like most intelligent species they have a rich history with a slow but steady progression from primitive hunter, gathers to the creation of settled communities and the eventual development of industry and advanced technology.
They have had a number of minor wars, border conflicts, civil unrest and dynastic disputes. None of these ever escalated into global threats and for the most part even the small regional conflicts were confined to small areas.
Eventually they made the leap into space, quickly coming into contact with other species. For the most part these contacts were friendly and they eventually managed to procure a few fiscally advantageous trade deals with these other species.
In a few short years they were conducting business with a number of Federation species and this resulted in them requesting admission. In 2289 they became members of the Federation.
In 2337 the first member of their species to become a captain in Star Fleet encountered a rare and unusual space anomaly that was eventually named Tyken’s Rift in homour of Captain Bela Tyken.
Government
They have an unusual style of government with the planet being divided up into 11 districts. Each district elects a leader who then serves on the unified planetary council for 11 years. This is set up in a staggered fashion so that only one council member gets replaced each year.
Description
While they appear to by typical humanoids with various body types, heights and weights they all have white hair. The males tend to wear their hair long, down past their shoulders and they usually have a long wispy beard and mustache as well. Females have long white hair that is normally longer than what the males have and it is usually braided or tied back away from the face and ears.
Physiology
As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.
Psychology
As with most intelligent humanoid species they suffer from various types and degrees of mental health issues. Funding and research is available to treat and hopefully cure those they can.
Religion
They believe that the universe is one big entity and that all of the life forms living in that universe are a part of the delicate symphony that is the miracle of evolution and survival.
Mythology
They have a huge collection of historical legends, tales and fables that revolve around different pivot points in their ancient history and even leading up to the industrial age.
Society
Their communities come in a variety of forms and styles with effort given towards the maintenance and upgrade of their communities. They try to ensure that the services and amenities are truly available to all.
Culture
They have a wide and varied wealth of various forms of artistic expression and a healthy curiosity and enjoyment of those created by other species. In fact they regularly export and import all kinds of art work. Often trading or encouraging the development of traveling displays for the enjoyment of all.
Customs
Their most recognized tradition is the “Naming”. This is when the oldest member of the family bloodline presents to the family any newborn children when they reach the age of 3 months. Prior to that no baby is addressed in any fashion other than the baby. After the naming ceremony they are now considered part of the family. They have a name and each and every family member in attendance greets the baby using that name.
Technology
They are on average considered to be mid-range when compared to other Federation member worlds when it comes to their level of ability in regards to technology.
Economy
They have a strong economy and a fairly high quality of life with a majority of their people living well. This has been achieved thanks to numerous long and short term trade deals with a wide range of different species.
Military
At one time they had a small but effective military force but that was quickly abandoned once they became members of the Federation. Now they have about a dozen frigate class patrol ships and a single cruiser. The cruiser never leaves their system and acts more as a training facility than anything else and over half of the patrol craft are constantly in use patrolling nearby systems and protecting freighters and transport vessels.
Federation Intelligence Files
In 2371, the location of Tyken's Rift was labeled on the star chart that Lt. Cmdr. Data and Captain Picard were studying in stellar cartography aboard the USS Enterprise-D.
Bela Tyken
Bela Tyken was a Melthusian captain who first encountered the rare anomaly which would come to be known as Tyken's Rift sometime before the mid-24th century.
When Tyken was trapped in the rift, his analysis determined that a massive energy release might overload and dislocate the anomaly. Utilizing his cargo of anicium and yurium, he was able to detonate the explosion and escape through the ruptured center of the rift.
Sources
Both Memory Alpha and Memory Beta were used as resources as well as the following TV episode, TNG: Night Terrors.
