History
The Great Auction of ‘2305 was an event in Pakled and Ferengi history. This was a famous action in which the Ferengi outbid the Pakled during the sale that allowed access to Iconian quantum-decoupler technology which was by being sold by the Breen.
First contact between the Federation and Pakleds took place in 2365, when the USS Enterprise-D answered a distress signal from a Pakled transport, the Mondor. The mayday was sent in order to lure in other ships whose technology could then be stolen. After affecting repairs to their ship, the Pakleds kidnapped the Enterprises chief engineer, Geordi La Forge, but eventually returned him after the Enterprise demonstrated its "force" with a harmless pyrotechnic display involving the Bussard collectors.
In 2366, a Pakled trade ship rescued the android Lore, who had been drifting free in space for nearly two years following his attempted betrayal of the Enterprise crew.
In the search for the Duras sisters, Lursa and B'Etor, in 2370, the USS Enterprise entered the Kalla system, which lies within Pakled space. The Pakleds didn’t realize its ore mines on Kalla III were being mined by the Duras sisters.
In late 2370, the Pakleds crossed the Demilitarized Zone to supply the Cardassians with a shipment of retro-viral vaccines.
Pakled traders regularly visited Deep Space 9 in the 2370s. They would often frequent Quark's, the Klingon restaurant and other establishments on the Promenade. Two Pakleds visited Deep Space 9 during the strike of the employees of Quark's in 2372. Alongside a Bolian woman they were almost the only guests in the establishment.
In late 2373, a Borg cube on a direct course for Sector 001 encountered the Mondor en route. However, the Collective deemed the Pakleds unintelligent and considered that it would be an inefficient use of resources to assimilate the freighter. However, they were later assimilated when the Borg needed extra reinforcements in their battle with Starfleet forces in Earth orbit.
The android B-4 was taken from his homeworld by the Pakleds. He was ultimately deemed useless and was traded to the Bolians.
Government
They do not seem to have any form of centralized government or if they do they simply chose to ignore it and do whatever they please. To date there are no records of any contact with any Pakled claiming to be from their government.
Description
To the casual observer the Pakleds appear to be intellectually challenged, especially in their verbal skills. However, despite the marked lack of intellect they proved to be far more cunning than they appeared, and used their innocuous appearance to deceive other races.
Pakleds are a heavy-set, rotund, lethargic humanoid scavenger species noted for their apparently underdeveloped verbal communication skills. However, they used this, as well as their simple-looking appearance, to deceive other races. Their most striking features, aside from size, are bushy upswept brows, heavily bagged eyes and a "dewlap" bottom lip.
Language
Paklit is the dominant language that is the main form of discourse to the Pakled civilization. Many words and names are constructed with combinations of hard consonants and changes of syllabic emphasis that, to speakers of Federation Standard, sound a bit like stuttering or slurred speech. Examples include the names "Grebnedlog" and "Tlurghonskh".
Physiology
As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. What makes them different is they have purplish blood which has a number of trace chemicals in it and their heavy-set, rotund bodies are a genetic fact that they could not alter even if they tried.
Psychology
They tend to be easy to bluff and confuse. They are also very slow to anger and seem to fail to understand when something is dangerous. They take their time, planning and preparing before they act. Other than that it is unknown if they suffer from any forms of mental illness. So far there has been no indication that they do or that they are familiar with the complex problems of dealing with and treating those who are afflicted.
Religion
They do not have any religious beliefs. To them you are born, you live and then you die. While alive you enjoy yourself and when you’re gone the best thing to do is to jettison the body out the closest air lock. On their home world the dead are dumped into the nearest active volcano.
Mythology
They do not seem to have any or if they did they have failed to make any records of them. This would seem likely as they tend to be interested in acquiring items and seldom give the past any consideration.
Society
Pakled merchants are known to live in untidy and unclean conditions. They controlled an area of space that included the Kalla system: however, they appeared to be a largely nomadic culture, traveling between worlds in search of supplies and materials needed for their continued survival.
Culture
They have absolutely no interest in any form of art or music. However they love to try different exotic foods and drinks. This may be because their own food dishes and drinks are very bland and lacking in taste or have a very acidic quality to them due to the volcanic activity on their home world and high levels of trace chemicals in their atmosphere.
Customs
Among their own people they tend to brag and strut when they have achieved a particularly difficult and profitable acquisition of either technology or property. Sometimes this may result in a disagreement which is solved by ramming into the offending individual with their chest or the sudden sneak attack where they wait till they turn their back and smash something big over their head.
Technology
The Pakleds' own technology (and, it seems, their intellectual development) was significantly less advanced than that of many other spacefaring races. According to Lt Cmdr. Data, it remained "a genuine curiosity how they ever mastered the rudiments of space travel." They were driven by their unwillingness to develop technological knowledge on their own, desiring to instantly gain the power that other cultures enjoy.
They therefore try to acquire technology from other species, generally by theft. Their "found" technology has accelerated their abilities at a far faster rate than their understanding and maturity can apparently handle.
Economy
Pakleds maintain a profitable cargo shipping consortium along the Federation/Cardassian border. They have an obsession with advanced technology they did not develop. Because of this they often find trouble with govermental shipping contracts, preferring to stay to grey-market or low budget shipping.
Military
Pakled ships usually have stolen or copied Klingon, Romulan, Cardassian, and Federation technology. As a result any ship encountered could have any combination of advanced technologies and even some systems unfamiliar to the Federation.
Federation Intelligence Files
Pakled is the mountainous homeworld of the Pakled species. Though geologically active, Pakled experienced low levels of volcanic activity, allowing life to flourish in the planet's fertile valleys. It was located in a region of the Alpha Quadrant that remained unexplored by the Federation until the 24th century.
When Major Kira was paying Kubus Oak a visit in DS9's holding cell in 2370, a Pakled was seen in the background, sitting in another cell.
These traders often frequent Deep Space Nine. Quark says living in Rom's messy quarters without Nog to clean up is like being a Pakled refuse merchant.
The Borg designation for the Pakleds is: Species 95012.
In 2375, Manager Lept used the example of the Great Auction of 05 as one examples of how events could have turned out if the Pakled's had outbid the Ferengi or if Surak had died if his ship capsized when escaping General Solon's army.
