They move through the rocks using powerful acids secreted from their glands. A representative of the Horta species was discovered in 2267. She was female, lived below the Federation mining facility, and could only communicate telepathically with non-Horta. Around stardate 3196.1, the Janus VI miners were suddenly attacked repeatedly by this creature, who as it turns out, was merely trying to protect her young. They were unaware that by mining, they were destroying her children, and in fact, the future of the Horta species entirely.
