Family and Personal History

Asha Torsten is the only daughter of Demar and Genin Torsten. Her uncle, Josar, is the pride of the family as he was the first to be chosen as a host. Her parents had always hoped that Asha would follow in his footsteps and so she was always pushed to be the best from the time she started pre-school. A broken wrist at age 7 lead to her fascination with medicine and her determination to become a doctor. She started at medical school on Trill at the early age 17, a testament to her drive and ambition and graduated with honours six years later, having specialised in Trill and symbiont joining and duly submitted her application to the Symbiosis Committee for Joining.

However, it was her research paper on the physiological differences between joined and unjoined Trill humanoids which was cited on her rejection. Her analysis that joined Trill gained no medical benefits from the symbiont and, in fact, gained the severe allergy to insect bites was said to "[show] a disregard for the spirit of growth and enlightenment which underpins the Joining process." She was told not to reapply.

This rejection was a crushing blow to both her and her parents. Asha quickly decided that she had to leave Trill behind her as every day was a reminder of her failure as both a person and a doctor. She has taken the rejection very personally and so "escaped" to study at Starfleet Medical so she could learn and focus on other species. However, her lack of self-confidence continues to undermine her achievements as she's just waiting for another rejection but she is aware enough of this to be trying to build herself up again so she can become the great doctor she's always dreamed of being.

Since being away from her homeworld she has developed an interest in the music of the different cultures around her, probably as another unconscious way to distance herself from being Trill and to give her some way of changing the subject when people question her about Joining.
